colic, wind or something else?

DS is 1mth old today, he's taking 5oz SMA gold about every 3-4 hours, after almost every feed in the day he's screaming and pulling his knees up like he's got belly ache. He gets a few burps up and also poops quite a lot (sorry tmi)

At his night feed he's falling asleep while drinking it then when we put him down he stays asleep, no crying or anything.

His poo is soft and yellow (tmi again) if that means anything.

Massaging his belly doesn't seem to help. Ride in car or pushchair sometimes helps as does holding him under his arms in mid-air but he's heavy to keep doing that.

Someone suggested changing his milk but i'm not sure, just wondered if anyone on here had any suggestions. I'm gonna ask hv when she comes again.

I seem to remember that formula should only be every 4 hours because it takes that long to digest.

if he's not being sick though I should think its wind. not a lot you can do, but rocking can help, and holding upright after feeds.

He is been sick a little bit but not the full bottle or anything.

Welcome to the club cuffy Sad
Ds is 1month on Saturday we still haven't found an answer - just learning to cope with it.

SenoraPostrophe · 09/03/2006 22:25

cuffyj1 · 09/03/2006 22:28

It's so awful when they cry isn't it, my dh hates it he can't cope he just wants to take his pain away for him.

We had the same problem with my ds now nearly 15 weeks and I can't sing the praises of cranial osteopathy enough, It worked a treat for my ds and now he's the happiest baby ever and sleeps through from 9 pm till 7-8 am. I just wish i'd seen one when my dd was little we had it for four hours every night with her till she was around 4 months.

cuffyj1 · 09/03/2006 22:34

Sorry if i'm been thick but what is cranial osteopathy?

I know in some areas , Leeds and London there are places that do it for free but not sure exactly where. I live in Liverpool and went to a health clinic I found on the net that was registered with the cranial osteopathy society \link{http://www.cranial.org.uk/\check here}. My ds needed 3 sessiona and it cost around £27 a time but so worth it.

edodgy · 09/03/2006 22:45

If I were you i'd start a sepearte thread asking other mn'ers in your area if they can recommend one.

edodgy · 09/03/2006 22:45

Also there's loads in the MN archives that recommend it thats why I decided to bite the bullet and am so glad I did.

cuffyj1 · 09/03/2006 23:01

Does it work then?

Is he comforted by you holding or cuddling him? If he isnt and still crys and brings his legs up, then its classic colic. As far as I know, you still have to wait for it to pass. My son had it and its hard at the time, but if its any reassurance, its usually thriving babies that get it. Sometimes lying them on their tummy across your knees gives them some comfort, or using the warmth from a wrapped hot water bottle whilst laying them across your lap (not for too long and not too hot of course!).

I have never heard any restrictions on how many hours apart formula feeds can be given either. I thought you could demand feed just as with breastmilk.

edodgy · 09/03/2006 23:03

It did for me and loads of others, i reckon its worth a try i was that desperate i'd have tried everything. Just seen you're in Barnsley we're hoping to move to holmfirth soon so will be quite near you.

my dd had colic. i ended up getting her some anti colic bottles from boots and they worked a treat. noticed a difference just after a day of using them.
they are expensive, but well worth it....

lilstarry1 · 10/03/2006 11:02

Our DD seems to suffer with bad wind... (she's now 6 weeks and it does seem to be improving!). We've been using Infacol, it does seem to have made some difference! The results aren't always immediate but her discomfort seems lessened! Have also found she's much worse when on her back so we're lying her on her front when possible (even if it means lying on her front then switching her onto her back once she's sound asleep!). HTH xxx

blondie82 · 10/03/2006 11:09

i used infacol at first, did notice that she brough up more wind. but didnt ease the colic...
