Do I need to start giving DS 'follow on' milk?

DS will be 26 weeks next week (blimey it's gone fast!). I#ve been weaning him for two weeks on veggie purees. He's yet to drop a bottle although he has started to take a little less milk in each bottle. I'm concerned about his depleting iron stores now he's reaching 6 months, esp as I had to take iron tablets during pregnancy because I had low iron myself. Anyway, to get to the point, do I need to change his formula to 'follow on' formula now he's six months? Does this have more iron and will it cause constipation? He currently has Aptamil Hungry baby formula.

No, I woyuldn't bother with follow on if you're happy with his infant milk. Although there is more iron in follow-on, it's not actually in a form that's easily accessible to your baby - i.e. will make very little difference. I suspect follow-on wouldn't be more constipating than hungry baby type formula.

As long as you are introducing foods which will top up his iron then he'll be fine. Follow-on is a bit of a marketing gimmick tbh.

Follow-on was basically invented to get round the advertiing ban on infant formula. I wouldn't bother.

don't believe the hype! agree with everyone else - unnecessary

katzg · 09/03/2006 21:59

agree with others - follow-on milk is just a marketing ploy from the formula companies because they can't advertise baby formula

RedZuleika · 09/03/2006 21:59

Incidentally, low iron is usual in pregnancy due to haemodilution. It doesn't necessarily mean that there was something wrong.

I did with dd at around 8 months and didn't bothered at all with ds. Both went on to organic cow's milk at around 15 months.

Wish I'd read this before I bought a box of follow-on milk! Not sure what to do with it now...

madmarchhare · 10/03/2006 17:10

Give it to my SIL, she wont listen to anyone except het HV.

Twiglett · 10/03/2006 17:16

no you don't .. follow on formula is a marketing ploy that enables formula companies to advertise

the iron stores in a baby don't just deplete suddenly .. its a gradual process and with a varied diet established by a year you'll be fine

a large percentage of mothers were anaemic during pregnancy .. don't let that make you especially nervous

ChampagneandNappies · 10/03/2006 17:17

Oh! I've just bought 12 huge tins of the follow on too...

madmarchhare · 10/03/2006 20:41
