Persistent thrush and fluconazole long term?

Sorry about the confusing title. We've been battling with thrush for months and I am utterly fed up. Have had up to 5 cracks on one nipple at the same time and have been taking fluconazole 50mg twice a day for more or less 8 weeks. Only recently I read that it on its own isn't likely to work and should have been using the miconazole or such cream at the same time as well as something for ds, but my gp didn't say any of this.
I don't know what to do to clear it and now I've just seen on another thread here that fluconazole can cause liver damage?
I am desperate, it is particularly bad on one breast and it starts getting better only to worsen time after time, what can I do?

Has anyone actually qualified in bfing support checked your latch/positioning/attachment? Cracks are common with latching/positioning issues or with something like tongue tie/lip tie (and are an infection vector for thrush) but not caused by thrush itself.

Another thing to consider is that it might be a staph infection (not thrush) which is preventing healing from occurring. Have any swabs/milk samples been taken or cultured?

Try calling/emailing the Drugs in Breastmilk helpline (or going on the FB group Breastfeeding and Medication as it is run by the same person - Wendy Jones, a pharmacist and breastfeeding counsellor) to get more information on your situation.

Thanks truthsweet, will def give them a call. Sorry forgot to mention that it's not latching issues as ds is 16mo and the problem started recently.
