Advice please: Think 4 week old dd2 has oral thrush and my boobs sting after feeding!

Think dd2 who is nearly 4 weeks has oral thrush as she has a yellowish coating on her tongue. My breasts 'stab' a bit after feeding and dd2 initally makes a clicking sound when feeding - but stops after a few minutes.

Made an appt with the GP but has been cancelled as he is ill - so may not get in until next week. Shock

Dd2 doesn't seem to be in any discomfort and I can live with the stabbing pain at the moment - will it get worse and/or clear up by itself? I am still bf as normal.

I read in the archives about clicking and thrush - why does it happen?

I had problems bf at the beginning and my nips got a bit shredded so I used breast shells and shields - but don't any more. I have been lavishing on the Laninsoh so my nips are healing. Having cracked nips etc may have started the thrush?

Any advice wouldbe gratefully received. Smile

You need to have this checked out as soon as possible. Is there another GP you can see, or does your surgery run emergency appointments?

My dd had oral thrush and passed it on to me, it was diagnosed by my bf counsellor (from the hospital), she spoke to the GP on the phone and they issued me a prescription without seeing me. Is there any chance that you could speak to a GP over the phone and see if they would be prepared to issue a prescription for you?

Alternatively, do you have an NHS walk-in clinic nearby that you could go to?

Is there a bf clinic nearby? Or could you rty ringing the NCT bf line or LLL? They should be able to advise you. (When I had thrush with dd1 my GP refused to believe that such a condition even existed in the first place Shock).
Hope someone with more expertise than me will be along soon.

foundintranslation · 09/03/2006 13:13

You need to try and clear it up if it is thrush, as otherwise you and dd will keep passing it to each other.
Is there another GP you could go to for an em prescription?

Radio 4's Check Up programme is on Oral Health this afternoon..if you'd like to phone in it's 08700 100 444 Smile

Rand NHS direct who advised me to ring my HV - didn't think of that! Blush

Spoke to the HV over the phone and she doesn't think it is thrush as my nips don't seem 'thrushy' and think the ache in my boobs may be becase dd2 is getting more efficient at feeding? This may be true as dd2 does seem to be taking less time to feed - does this sound plausible.

Seeing my HV on Monday anyway - so hopefully everything will be O.K until then.

Hotmama, I would try to see any doctor asap - don't think it will just clear up on its own. When I had it I was prescribed cream and eventually a course of oral tablets; ds had oral drops. You and dd2 both need to be treated. It can get quite bad and I know someone who gave up bf because it got so bad so don't let it get to that stage. You should also avoid refined sugar, dried fruit, alcohol, yeast... things the thrush thrives on. Taking Acidophilus (sp?) tablets - from health food shops - is also thought to help.

HTH and hope it clears up soon Smile

Tatties · 09/03/2006 14:17

TBH I would get an over-the-phone diagnosis from a BFC rather than your HV.

JennyLee · 09/03/2006 14:25

get to the doctors and get mouth drops for baby and cream for your nips , ds got it in hospital at 11 months , the nip cream is crap though as it keeps your nips damp

JennyLee · 09/03/2006 14:25

I think you use it for about a week

hotmama · 15/03/2006 09:28

Saw a crap locum on Monday who prescribed Nystan for dd2 - drops in her mouth. Gave me Canestan duo for vaginal thrush - but nothing for my breasts?

I queried this and he said that the drops given to dd2 would sort me out by bf? Does this seem right - as I said he was a bit of a crap locum as he said I could rub some of the Canestan on my nips - but the box says it is for vaginal use only.

Advice please! Smile

Hotmamma - get an antifungal cream that you can put on your nipples that doesn't need to be washed off. Check with the pharmacist that it's ok. Wash eveything at 60 to wipe out the candida, sterilize all dummies, teats. You & your baby need to be treated.

anchovies · 15/03/2006 09:44

I have got thrush at the moment too and I have got the nystan to take (not ds - strange!) and daktarin oral gel (you can get this over the counter at a pharmacy) which I am supposed to rub onto my nipples 4 times a day and ds's gums twice a day for one week. The daktarin is for mouths not nipples but doesn't need to be washed of before feeding.

sachkrimbo · 15/03/2006 09:48

My daughter got thrush and it took three lots of meds before it cleared up Shock. I had cream for my nips but they had already cracked and bled. Do get something for your nips before it gets that bad, all I can remember now of bf is the agony of feeding with bleeding nips.

Tatties · 15/03/2006 10:08

You both need to be treated. As Milward says, check with the pharmacist what cream you can put on your nipples. I still have the cream I used so will go and check in a bit (ds asleep on my knee ATM!) When I used it I put a thin layer on after each feed, and there was no need to wash it off as by the time we got round to feeding again on that side it had disappeared. I used the cream for 2-3 weeks, which improved things dramatically, but didn't clear it up 100%. I think you said you had shooting pains in your breasts - which indicates the thrush is inside and IME this is only cleared up with the oral treatment. Doc may be reluctant to give it as it is 'contra-indicated' while BF, but it is fine to take, I think the BFN has some info on it, and my doc also did some research and confirmed that it was ok. I would go and see your normal doctor when s/he is back.

anchovies · 15/03/2006 10:10

That explains why I was given the Nystan to take then Tatties, I've got the shooting pains - thanks. Meant to say Daktarin is the brand name, it's miconazole 20mg.

hotmama · 15/03/2006 12:10

I'd read up on Mumsnet before I went to see the locum and mentioned about the dakatarin gel stuff - still dismissed me! Angry

Spoke to the surgery and the normal gp is still off and still the same crap locum. Explained the problem and advised me to ring the HV and they are hopeful that the normal GP is back tomorrow.

I thought the advice from the locum was wrong. My nops are still a bit cracked but aren't bleeding and surprisingly I am still getting the pain after feeding.

You would think that the welfare of a 4 week old and bf mother would be better wouldn't you?

Tatties - thanks for the link - will print off and take to the Docs.

My GP & HV weren't very clued up on thrush either.. The cream I used was Clotrimazole 1% if that helps.
