Whatis wrong with him/me?

I have a 5mo boy, he had a difficult birth and nicu gave him formula but we managed to erradicate the ff and he has been bf since 7 days.

We have fought weeks of thrush and rubbish hcp, cracked nipples at the beginning, massive percentile drops but we got through it, but now, I am ready to give up..

He started with diahorrea 8 days ago, no sickness, just watery nappies after every feed, sometimes 2 or 3. Been to Gp 3 times, they have took a sample, he is not dehydrated but they gave me some dioralyte to give him. He wont take it. I managed to get @30ml out of 1 200ml dose with a syringe and that was it. I tried again today, he has had a little but not sure if I should continue.

He is still doing watery poos all the time. Sometimes a bit green.
He has always been a snacker but it is even worse now so I am trying to block feed just in case it is the first milk that is causing it, but it is still continung.

DP keeps insisting I give him more dioralyte but I feellike he isn't getting enough milk as it is.

Any ideas? This is really getting me down.

I have posted here too last week because my 6 month old has been having unexplained diarrhoea for the past 2 weeks. The stools cultures have come back clear and he had no other symptoms. Unlike you I'm confident that it's completely unrelated to breastfeeding. After all if there was a problem ( like lactose intolerance or foremilk/hindmilk imbalance) it would have been apparent earlier on. Also hindmilk/foremilk is hardly a problem after the first few weeks when you're engorged.
Reading your post is reassuring in a way because it could be a bug going around i.e. viral gastroenteritis.
Hopefully they'll get better soon!!

olimpia · 05/08/2012 21:22

Also if he's not dehydrated the dioralyte won't help do why give it to him? I mean by all means follow your GP's advice but do ask her what's the point of he's not dehydrated.

Rhubarb78 · 05/08/2012 21:29

is he teething? ds went through this a few weeks ago, didnt seem to bother him at all and i read somewhere they can get diarrohea when teething, its to do with all the saliva they are swallowing. it just settled down on it own

Crazybit · 05/08/2012 21:32

He is super nosy and distracted and doesn't seem to take enough milk so it could be that. I have ordered a bf necklace and try to do it in a quiet place but he has older sisters..or just get's distracted by his hands! I thought the same with the dioralyte but thought maybe I should since it was advised?? I don't know, I just don't know what to do any more.

Yes he is teething also Rhubarb

But how do you know he doesn't take enough milk? If he's satisfied and happy then he can't be hungry surely?
Mine is also very distracted and sometimes doesn't want to feed but overall he's feeding so often that I can't imagine that he's not getting enough
I thought that there's no evidence to support the fact that diarrhoea can be caused by teething but anecdotally it happens a lot?

Crazybit · 05/08/2012 21:46

Assumed the not enough milk because of the green poo..

Green poo means that there's something upsetting the normal digestion and absorption of food, typically a virus or bacterial infection which means food doesn't stay in the intestines long enough.

Thanks :)

Guess it is a wait and see then...?

We're meant to be flying away on holiday next weekend, not sure if this will stop us going.

We're going away tomorrow! I've been on the brink of cancelling but then he's slowly getting better and all the exams were clear so we've finally decided to go for it.
Good luck!

Crazybit · 05/08/2012 22:27

Ah, that is a good point. I guess if the sample comes back clear, we should be ok. I've not been to see any friends for the whole time, and missing out on 2 visits next week because of it so very much need to get away.

Have a lovely time and I hope your LO is over the worst of it :)

It does sound like there's a bug going around...My 13wo dd has had diarrhoea and vomiting for the last 2 weeks, with poo ranging in colour from electric green to mahogany brown. We've taken her to the GP twice, and they told us not to worry; that it was probably a virus and would work its way through her system in time. They also gave us dioralyte sachets. She's been getting gradually better over the last couple of days, and today was pretty much back to normal. Obv you should get your LOs checked out, but I just wanted to post just in case it's reassuring. The GP told us that as long as dd is "well in herself", then her bowels will probably sort themselves out in time - and now it looks like they finally have done, thankfully...

Crazybit · 06/08/2012 12:25

Thanks Molly. It is reassuring to know :) we had greeny Brown this morning but he slept better (a full 4 hours!) So had a better feed this morning and still had a green poo, which also reassures me it can't be the fore/hind milk imbalance thing.

breast fed babies don't need dioraylte epically if he's still breastfeeding ok. breastmilk contained the right balance of electrolytes as it is and all the good bacteria which will help his gute heal after a bug.

Where his nappies very smelly to? As they can get temporary lactose intolerance after a bug. All you need to do though is breastfeed as this will clear up on its own.

Crazybit · 07/08/2012 09:58

Thanks Mig. No, they are not smelly, but I noticed that the teething granules I've been giving him contain lactose, wondering if there is a connection..

OP posts:
narmada · 07/08/2012 14:39

Not likely, because your breastmilk contains a lot of lactose as it is. A bit more from teething granules unlikely to affect your baby unless he is literally downing packetfuls of the stuff in one sitting.

I would wait for the stool culture to come back and see what it says. Some bugs temporarily knock out the gut's ability to produce lactase and therefore digest lactose in BM or formula, but things should go back to normal as the gut gets going again.

If the diarrhea continues then do take him back to the GP tho, even if nothing showed up in the original screen. Unchecked long-term diarrhea needs investigating in babies (and in adults, too).
