Bottle feeding expressed breastmilk

Mishmash157 · 05/08/2012 18:50

Any advice on dealing with exclusively feeding expressed breastmilk? My baby is 2 weeks old and unable to breastfeed, need help with how often to express, how much to feed her & any tips. Most sites just give info on breastfeeding or formula feeding.
Any help appreciated x

Search for posts on 'exclusive expressing' or exclusive pumping'
such as

There are quite a lot of US sites with info as well, make sure you search on 'pumping'.

good luck!

Thanks that's great. Inspiring that people have kept it up for over 6 months, seems a long way off at the moment but will give it a go! x

My main advice would be to hire a double hospital grade pump ASAP - i hired directly from Medela for around £40 a month and bought loads of spare pump parts as well.

This book was my bible:

I don't know your circumstances but Fwiw my baby couldn't latch but I tried nipple shields at 2 weeks and it worked. I was gearing up for long term pumping so might be worth considering. I exclusively pumped until then do sympathise. Whilst bottle feeding I fed him 3 hourly unless he wanted it before and he normally took between 60-120ml. Have you looked at the kellymom website? Exclusive pumping is not uncommon is the US due to shorter mat leaves so definitely look at US sites

Iam in your situation and all is going well 11 wks in. I have hired a hospital grade double pump and express 8x per day so every 3 hours. It takes around 10minutes each time and i get between 100-220ml per session. My LO feeds every 3 hours and sleeps all through thenight. He is gaining weight better than other ebf babies too. I have a huge supply of millk in the freezer now too. Through the night I leave my bottles and nozzles in the fridge to save sterilizing in the middle of the night.

I didn't exclusively pump but I did pump a lot. The night time pumps are important so set the alarm for around 3.00 a.m.

We also used a Medela haberman teat, but you may not need to do that as you are not intending to put baby to breast.

Having said that, it may be worth putting baby to breast anyway, regardless of milk suckled as that way the receptors in your nipples will pick up from baby's saliva which particular antibodies might be needed. I don't know how this works in exclusively pump-fed babies but it might be worth exploring, though you will probably need a real expert. Tik-tok might know the mechanics of it.

Also, remember that you don't need to sterilise equipment if you are breastfeeding. Just hot soapy water and a good rinse, and you're all set to go. Breastmilk is amazing stuff and is "self sterilising" for want of a better explanation.

there is a good section on kellymom website on exclusive pumping.
