UK Formula recommendations?

theowlworrier · 04/08/2012 23:39

OK, a little random, I know. Currently living in USA. DD (5mo) is FF and has enfamil infant. We are coming home to the UK for a month soon, and obviously I won't be able to carry a month's worth of formula in my baggage. I have no idea whether Enfamil is available in the UK (didn't have any kids before we left, so never really thought about it..!). Can anyone tell me if it is, and if not, what formula would be my best bet. My mum is doing a shopping run before we arrive, and would like to give her some guidance on what to get. Many thanks :)

To my knowledge you can't get that particular formula over here, i first used cow&gate with DD but she wasnt too keen on it so i switched to SMA and she loved it and feed really well on it. I would recommend SMA, to anyone!

My sister used SMA with her DS too and she says the same as me if I had any more they would go on SMA.

Hope that helps

Cool, thank you. I will try the SMA, and I suppose worst case, I can pick something else up if she's not too keen!

We have the ready made cartons here which, whilst expensive, your mum could purchase a variety of brands and then decide which suits best when you arrive.

just1fornow · 05/08/2012 09:36

Yea there is plenty to choose from, but SMA in my opinion is the best.

But if she isn't keen just try another, depending in who you speak to they will say others but all have a high nutritional value.

MigGril · 05/08/2012 10:02

There isn't a best formula they are all very similar. Its more about what suits her and what she will drink. op suggestion about trying a few of the different ready made first stage formulas is a good one, other wise if your mum buys a while tube of formula and you DD doesn't like it you'd have wasted it.

I think aptimal is the uk equivalent as closest to your USA brand

TeaAndSlanket · 05/08/2012 10:15

Check on UK Amazon, as you might be able to get your brand delivered to your mum's house; they sometimes carry international brands.

I would get a couple of small cartons of each to see which she prefers. I like Hipp Organic.

This was me four weeks ago! And actually, I did take a tonne of Enfamil with menfor a three week stay. Bought the single serve sachets for the flight, and took sterilised bottles in my hand luggage. Mixed with mineral water once through security at JFK. Evian is the recommended water, but for two or three feeds I can't believe there is much in it. Then bought bumper packs of Enfamil from Babies R Us - two pouches in a single cardboard box - which I put in my suitcase. Took very little space, and freed up room for my shopping on the way home :-). I took just enough, but figured that if I ran out I would either bf more, or just try a local brand for a few days of feeding. Incidentally, in case you are thinking of going to Spain, apparently Enfamil is available there.

Have a great trip!

Ah, see, I am exceptionally lazy, and must confess to using the ready to feed tins . She did have the powder to begin with, so maybe i could switch back to that. I am flying from a tiny airport as well, and I have a vague recollection there is not actually a shop in the international departures wing... Ah, I should probably stop stressing so much!

Do you mean the large tins of ready to feed that I think that they sell in the US? Bear in mind our ready to feed ones are single feed (more or less), so very pricey to buy it made up.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/08/2012 21:27

You can get big bottles of ready to feed here now too.

Tangointhenight · 05/08/2012 21:29

SMA made my baby constipated, so buy a few cartons first, I like the milks with the prebiotic I.e. hipp organic, cow and gate or aptimil.

Chocoholiday · 05/08/2012 21:30

Hipp organic is great - used it with all three, no probs.

YoulllWinGoldOneDay · 05/08/2012 21:38

Where Ken - I must admit it's not currently relevant to me, but I've not noticed it everywhere the way the tins and small cartons are?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/08/2012 22:06

It has just come out - its in all the supermarkets now. I noticed it because my sis needed me to pick up some Aptamil for her and I got her a big tetra pack thing. Was Envy as I spent so long rafting on with mini cartons.

YoulllWinGoldOneDay · 05/08/2012 22:07

That's interesting. Thanks.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/08/2012 22:10

And you can also get bottles that you just screw a teat onto, no need to sterilise anything else! Things move on so fast.

YoulllWinGoldOneDay · 05/08/2012 22:10

Just looked online. Yes, 1l bottles now in most brands. In my defence, they still had the 'new' banner across them, so you must be right, very recent.

LST · 06/08/2012 06:40

I like cow and gate. It's the only one out of the millions we tried DS agreed with.

1789 · 16/08/2012 15:18

Sorry - it has to be said - baby formula is full of demineralised whey and vegetable oil which are very unhealthy, synthetic and refined 'foods'. Do a little research about the ingredients in formula milk. I find it very funny that mothers who insist on organic food for their children are still willing to give them vegetable oil-based formula!

If you have to formula feed, try making your own formula (you can find recipes on the internet).
