Help I'm panicking!!

Baby is 3 and a half weeks old and has been breast feeding really well but has just coughed loads which scared me to death and then vommed all over me and had a really horrible green stringy nappy, do they normally cough before being sick, it sounded like he was choking hence the panic. I've just googled and it said the baby might not be latched properly and is getting too much foremilk, I do feel like I'm over producing and he is struggling to latch properly because my boobs are too full for him. Any advice?

How's baby doing now?

Umm, green stringy nappies are not unusual.

The coughing and vomiting may just be a coincidence - did s/he notice the vomiting? Cos my lo possess ALL the tie and it's nothing to worry about.

If you're concerned about the latch then you could do with a chat with a breastfeeding counsellor. Do you have a local milk cafe or breast feeding group? You can google your local ones - pop down there and have the counsellor watch you do a feed - they're great if you have any concerns about breastfeeding.

Hope that helps a bit.

What was the vomit like? It might be worth getting your latch checked if you feel concerned, though its normal for your breasts to still be very full at this stage.

It sounds like it was just a bit of sick up, which may have been inhaled a bit before coming out.

If it was a one off, it's probably nothing to worry about. If it happens on a regular basis, then you can look into doing something about it (if he is feeding well then holding him upright after a feed is often enough)

He could have a cough and having just fed was sick? That and the green nappies might mean he's got bit of a cold? I know DD and DS had green nappies when they were ill.

Has he always had green nappies or just now?

Hi OP, congrats on the new arrival.

Have a read of this in relation to oversupply and helping DS during feeds.

It could be the greeny poo isn't related to the sickness and fussyness but as the previous poster said, it might be worth seeking out a bf counsellor for some reassurance on your latch etc.

What is baby's weight? Has he lost/gained since birth? (it is normal to drop some weight).

You could call the La Leche league for some advice too.

Thank you everyone, he's had a couple of green nappies before but not frequently, the sick was pure milk but it had been in his tummy for about half an hour, he's fed twice again since then and so far he's been okay, he has got a bit of a snuffly nose but it's not affecting his feeding, it just scared me because he hasn't done it before and i thought he was choking, I need to get to grips with the hind milk fore milk thing and try to get a pattern going I think re which boob he has been on/should be on next. Thanks again

One off vomits and the odd green nappy are not usually anything to worry seriously about in my experience. The main thing is to keep an eye on what happens over the coming hours. If the bouts of coughing or the vomiting repeat, then you might want to contact the NHS seeing as the baby is still so young.

Susieloo · 04/08/2012 20:55

Thank you god, he is gaining weight very rapidly, he went from 9lb to 10lb 10 in about ten days and he seems to be still gaining judging by his double chin and how heavy he is to lift on to my boob!

Thank you pink, if it happens anymore frequently then I will call NHS direct.

You really don't need to worry about fore milk and hind milk, or a feeding pattern - your body will sort itself out.

Your baby sounds fine - a one off sick is nothing to worry about. Imagine if your tummy was full of liquid and you had a bit of a cough - you'd likely be sick too.
