What are your breastfeeding "super" foods? I need some ideas!

Im breastfeeding my 2nd DD (now 9wks+2) she's feeding great, As did my first daughter up until she was 13months. (now 21months)

I just need some ideas for good snacks, super foods, recipes for giving me a boost, I am finding it really hard to be eating the right things, enough fruit & veg, as i just dont ever seem to have time to make nice meals/snacks. Im raising them alone at the minute until DP is home, so its all a bit manic.

Organisation skills are a must, which i am lacking also, but I just dread making things (healthy) at the minute. DD1 eats well, but has off days and i think shes picking this up off me.

Also, What healthy snacks do you give your toddlers?

I used my slow cooker a lot when my DDs were tiny, that way you can do all the preparation in the morning. Then when the evening comes and you are stuck to the sofa cluster feeding you can just serve up and eat.

Ready-prepared foods are brilliant too, they are expensive but it'll only be for a few weeks until things settle down. Those little boxes of chopped-up melon etc are great toddler snacks too.

Another thing I used to do was make an enormous bowl of cous cous, pasta salad etc and just dip into it whenever I got hungry.

And when I got chocolate cravings I hid in the fridge so that I didn't have to share DD1 didn't pick up bad habits.

Here is a recipe for my favorite, healthy, chocolate snack. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Blend one or two chopped up frozen bananas with one or two spoons of 100% coco powder, add a little milk.

Yum, yum....

Avocado and banana mashed together and spread on wholewheat toast. Very good for all 3 of you.
Also the couscous salad thing. Pre prepare lots.
You can buy portion sized pots of Heinz baked beans: a minute in the microwave, serve with toast.
Baby new potatoes, do up a salad with some hard boiled eggs and keep in fridge.

One packet unsalted peanuts. One packet raisins. One packet chocolate chips. Mix, store in large jar. Delicious.

Marmite (yes, salty but good for B vits), bowl of multigrain cereal (watch the sugar content), bowl of porridge made either with milk or water, cheese and multigrain crackers, hard boiled egg, nuts, yogurt, avocado, wholewheat pitta bread & hummus, raw carrots, celery & cucumber with plain yogurt dip.

I ate Haribos at a frightening rate for the first few weeks!

But one of my best dinners is chopping up a selection including peppers, aubergine, halloumi, onions, courgette, tomatoes and tossing them with olive oil, garlic and chilli and chucking them in the oven. We then construct our own wraps with yoghurt, salad, hummous and jalapenos. You can also chuck in meatballs, or chunks of chicken if you want a meaty version.

Any leftovers are good with pasta, in couscous, as a salad, grilled with cheese on a wrap as a mini pizza thing... the uses and variations are endless.

You can do the chopping a bit ahead of time.

DS isn't a toddler but the "make your own" element might help?

I ate a lot of Dorset muesli.

Eggs - boiled and cooled, then put in fridge. Good source of protein. Scrambled with mushrooms or tomato (just to get in a bit of veg with a meal)

Toast - any topping you have in. Whole meal obviously healthier but white is far nicer Grin hmmm with real butter...

Pasta with passata sauce - cartons are about 39p from Aldi. Dump what ever veg and/or meat you have in the fridge in a frying pan whilst pasta is cooking. Add dried mixed herbs and garlic if you got it in and the passata, then mix with pasta once cooked. Make loads and eat some hot and keep cold for quick lunches. Fool proof made up recipe.

Cold chicken breasts / 'naice' ham - either purchase or cook yourself and put in fridge for sandwiches/pasta above. I ate a LOT of sandwiches when dd was newborn. I'd make up my sandwich whilst she had a nap in a morning chuck it in the fridge for later.

Congrats on newborn Wink

Thanks for the replies.

I need to plan out meals i think, according to my shopping list. I just wish I was a salady person sometimes but i only really like lettuce! eeek thats terrible.

I need to try though. my DD1 like most things, I just wish i could enjoy them with her!

And im still rubbish on my fluid intake. I tried hummus the other day - didnt like it much like most people do!!?

I'm also never 100% sure on how long home made things can be stored in a freezer for :s (embarrassed)

I ate oatcakes when I needed a snack whilst BFing at the beginning. You can't eat them quickly and handy to keep by your bed for night time boosts.
