Silent Reflux Baby - Milk other than BM and poos

DD2 has silent reflux and is on omeprazole.

I have also gone dairy free.

We were seeing a massive improvement including normal poos (with seeds instead of huge chunks) but recently things have gone backwards a bit. Huge, huge chunks, crying and fussing etc. Feel at my wits end!

We have started weaning (she is 5 months) on HV's advice - just bland fruit/veg and baby rice and she is enjoying it and it had been going well until the poos went bad and the fussing started about 2 days ago. Could be the heat?? Feel like I'm casting around for reasons!

I would also like to cut out bf during the day at 6/7 months as she is so fussy that doing it anywhere but at home is a total nightmare. She won't take a bottle but have high hopes for a beaker! Which formula for dairy free is best?

I have a dietician app next week and the paediatrician in September (12 weeks from referral to appointment - crap). Can the dietician prescribe the formula? Can the gp?

Any advice welcome as in a bit of a flap.

IME - most babies reflux becomes much better or even goes away at around the six month mark. I think that starting solids really helps with it. So hang in there I think things will get better. It definitely could be the heat as babies find changes in temperature unsettling. It could also be another food allergy so introduce things slowly and keep an eye on trends - people can be allergic to certain fruit or vegetables.

With regards to fussiness about bf - I have found with my two that they go through stages of not wanting to feed when out and about and around five months was one of the worst ages for this and I found this also improved in a month or so. During this phase - I would try to ensure that I wasn't out for a whole day or if I was I would try to find a private place to feed whether a friend's bedroom or a parenting room at our local mall or the zoo - both of which had handy cubicles with curtains.

One of my friends whose son had a dairy allergy found Neocate to be a good formula to combine with bf - but talk to the dietician who should be able to at least point you in the right direction.

Really? 6 months? That would be awesome, I was assuming she'd be a year before we saw any improvement. It's been worrying me as we're planning a move to Italy in the new year.

Yes, I had thought distraction was playing a part now but we still have some of the reflux fussiness - arching back, phobia of my left boob and need to feed standing up/walking around etc.

Yes - it does usually and if it doesn't go away completely it should certainly get better. Here is one website which mentions it and is generally helpful for all things breastfeeding related: kellymom.com/health/baby-health/reflux/.
Also if you have any questions about bf and reflux, bf generally or whatever try your local La Leche League. They are very helpful and will most likely have had experience with reflux bf babies.

Also some babies just prefer one side. DS vastly preferred my left side even though he didn't have reflux. I could only sneak the right side in at nights or when he was half asleep.

My ds1 had silent reflux, it was simply hideous. However at 6 months it improved so dramatically, almost over night! I think it coincided with being able to sit up and eating proper food! I hope this happens for you! Smile

Ps ds2 now 5 months and no sign of reflux!!!
