Blotchy red rash on ds - breast feeding

Ds is 5 months and exclusively breast fed. Just recently he has started getting a blotchy red rash on his head/face, neck and shoulders when he's being fed.

It comes up almost immediately as soon as he starts and fades within a few minutes. If I need to feed him on both sides it flares up again (just for a few minutes) before fading so I'm guessing it maybe has something to do with the foremilk??

Could he be having a reaction (allergic?) to just the foremilk? Has anyone come across anything like this before?. I don't want to give up bf'ing but obviously don't want to carry on if I'm going to cause problems for ds :(

Maybe he's just warm? This doesn't sound like an allergic reaction to me, as (from what I know) allergic reaction rashes are bumpy, and generally carry on for more than a few minutes.

Thanks NCQ.
No it's definately not bumpy, just red.

Just seemed a bit wierd that it always flared up at feeding time.

my ds gets this occasionally - i think its just him sucking so hard that makes him go a bit red - kind of like when you strain or shout a lot - just blood rushing to the surface iyswim?

It does sound a bit strange, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Sazhig's idea makes sense too.

Feeding does increase blood flow, it affects blood sample stuff, at least in tiny babies.

This used to happen to my DS as well whenhe was that age. It didn't seem to bother him at all so don't think it can have been itchy & I agree, i think it was something to do with the breastmilk. For while I monitored what I was eating & drinking to see if it was some kind of allergy but couldn't come up with any pattern. However, it has now stopped. DS is 8mth now & to be honest I'm not really sure when it stopped but must have been a good month ago at least. I would say carry on with bf'ing if it doesn't seem to bother him.

BTW my ds is 20 months!

Thanks for your replies. I don't feel so worried now. Unfortunately it might not be an issue much longer anyway as bf'ing has suddenly gone pear-shaped :( :(
