Those nursing children over a year old?

How many breastfeeds does your child have and how many other drinks please?

I ask as 13 month old DD seems to want less breastfeeds and more other drinks now. I've never really offered her many other drinks, just a few sips of water here and there or odd drink of cows milk, but she's just had a short breastfeed and afterwards a cup full of cows milk too. Is that usual?

when mine got over a year the breastfeed graduallty decreased my last dd actually started refusing breastfeeding totally at 15 months but i was pregnant at the time which i have heard can cause that.
I would follow her lead over what she wants at this age.what youre doing sounds fine.

not sure whats 'usual'! but FWIW DD is 2.2 and still feeds at least 3 or 4 times a day, she has water in between if we are out and about and if im feeling very generous she can have an apple juice. she usually has 'milk' with meals (dairy and soya intolerant)- but would always choose me if possible and will often feed after meals too. dont mind so much this weather as long as shes getting something. just need to remember to drink myself!

Ds is 22 months old, he has 2 or 3 bf a day first thing and nap time, and sometimes bedtime (sometimes milk with daddy). At mealtimes/snacktimes he has a cup of water if he wants it.

lagartija · 25/07/2012 21:22

DD is 14 months and feeds on waking nd before bed. she drinks water during the day (quite a lot, but then it's 40º here)

midori1999 · 25/07/2012 21:23

Thankyou.

Maples, I'm offering all the time. Grin

She's still having quite a few feeds, she was having 8-12 a day and I'd say she's still having that, but maybe nearer to the 8 a bit more often. I just wondered why she suddenly felt the need to have a drink after a breastfeed. it's not especially hot in Scotland where I am. Quite a few times recently she's had a breastfeed and then a bit later been thirsty and refused a breastfeed in favour of a cup of water or cows milk.

I suppose it's probably normal.

DS is 2yo and has morning and night Bfs when I am at work and when I'm at home he has two naps where he feeds to sleep. I do give him either water or full fat milk if he is thirsty and he will ask for either, he doesn't ask for Breastmilk if he is thirsty, just if he is tired! He does drink loads of water through the day, maybe four cups worth.

CaseyShraeger · 25/07/2012 23:38

Two or three, plus sometimes middle of night. She drinks a fair bit of water too.

whatinthewhatnow · 25/07/2012 23:55

she sounds lovely, just enjoying different tastes maybe?

dd is 2.2 and when I'm not at work feeds 2-3 times in the day and the same overnight. When I'm at work it's evening, then 3-4 times overnight.

She drinks juice with meals, and has a drink of water on the go during the day that she walks round the house pouring all over the floor sips as and when.

rednellie · 26/07/2012 03:29

My DD would have been having a similar amount at 13 months, then it tailed off, then it ramped up again at 18 months (classic apparently) and then tailed off when I became pregnant. From about 15 months I'd say we were averaging 2 feeds a day, and she'd drink water inbetween. She wouldn't touch cows milk until she stopped breastfeeding...they're all different!

rainbow2000 · 26/07/2012 08:09

Ds5 is 13 months and has a feed in the morning and sometimes during the day and sometimes at night before bed.He doesnt nurse that much bout 2/3 times daily now.Just follow their lead you cant go wrong then.

camdancer · 26/07/2012 08:26

DD2 is 14mo. She feeds morning, afternoon and bedtime but quite reluctantly. She does drink a lot of dilute squash (3+ beakers during the day) so I think she just doesn't need to bf for a drink. But she is cmp intollerant so I want to keep bf going for as long as possible just to maximise her calcium. It is very sad as I had visions of keeping going until 2, but I think she just isn't all that fussed.

15 month old DTs have 3-4 bfs during the day and up to 6 at night. I offer water at all meals and snacktimes and if we are outside when its hot. They drink a very small amount of it (maybe 50ml max in 24 hours) but are eating a lot of fruit in this weather. I have given up trying to work out what's normal...

lagartija · 27/07/2012 09:14

Bloody hell DW123 you must be knackered!

OneLittleBabyTerror · 27/07/2012 10:08

Mine is 16mo and have two bf a day, morning and bedtime. In between she drinks lots of water and also a beaker of cows milk. I don't really measure the volume she drinks, but she'll hold her tommee tippee first cup for quite a while and her mouth looks like she's drinking. For cows milk it's around 50-75ml.

tickleme63 · 27/07/2012 10:18

12-month-old DS normally feeds in the morning, after his first nap, after his second nap, and before bedtime - and then twice in the night. He has plenty of water/cows milk in between although he's discovered how funny it is to take a big gulp and then dribble it out, so not sure how much actually goes down! He normally tries to drink half his bathwater via the medium of watering can as well - poor lad must be parched! Grin
