This is DC3 so I should know better but am so anxious.
I have to go to the US for work. This is critical if I still want to have a job. I have no choice. DD2 is EBF.
She eats solids and will take a bottle so am sure it will be fine BUT will my supply be ruined? Will we be able to carry on as before?
Plus she still wakes at night :-( It's in September so I need to get prepared.

if you take a breast pump you should be able to keep your supply up no problems. how long are you going for?

CMOTDibbler · 24/07/2012 13:20

Take a pump ,make sure you express really, really well twice a day, three if you can (I'd express when I woke up, at 5, and then before bed) and you'll be fine.

I travelled a lot when bfing, and kept going till 23 months. When I was away, ds had bottles from dh in the night, and they both managed fine

mistlethrush · 24/07/2012 13:28

You could freeze quite a bit between now and then too if you wanted to - so there's a good stock for when you're away.

Edma · 24/07/2012 13:40

Am going for less than a week. Do hand pump work? I only ever used the hospital electric double pump which works really well.
I need to invest in a good one.
And I will be missing the elder going back to school and DH doesn't even know how to do DD1's hair Sad

A hand pump would be hard work - I had a double Ameda lactaline which made it so much easier. You can get them on ebay very reasonably and run on batteries over there, then sell on after. I got a US power supply for mine for not a huge amount.

Your dh will learn won't he ? Or she'll cope with a basic pony.

KatAndKit · 24/07/2012 14:17

I found the Avent hand pump fairly effective and it isn't too expensive.

Edma · 24/07/2012 14:47

Thanks! I might well get a double pump on ebay. Good idea CMOT. What's a basic pony?

KatAndKit, I think I need to try a hand one to be reassured as I had supply issues with DC1 and 2 and I use to express very little with hand pumps!

CMot - wrong comment on this thread or interesting phone switch... we're not on the pony club thread!

I found a hand pump fairly effective (Avent) although it didn't work if I was worried about it potentially not working.

CMOTDibbler · 24/07/2012 15:01

Sorry, I meant a really basic pont tail - brushed, pulled into his hand at her neck, a band on it

DilysPrice · 24/07/2012 15:27

I found a hand pump fine - it's light, cheap and quiet, and your priority isn't to achieve lots of milk (which presumably you'd be dumping) it's just to keep your supply ticking over.

I'm concerned about this too. I'm 29 weeks pregnant now, and supposed to be going on a trip to Germany next April, so baby will be around 6 months old. The trip is for 4 days I think. I plan to BF. Am I going to cock it all up completely? My baby won't be weaning by then. I'm worried about supply and about taking BF away from baby who won't understand where mummy is gone. It's not even possible is it?

Sorry to hijack.

Edma · 26/07/2012 22:07

Want, I think it depends if your baby is used to drink from a bottle or not. DC1 and 2 were usede to it, but not DD2 so she wouldn't have coped at all.
The best is maybe to start expressing now and again beforehand and try to introduce her to the feeling gently.

She will be fed expressed milk 2 days a week when I'm at Uni (well that's the plan, I hope she agrees).
