Hey. My friend has been diagnosed with PND this week she is unsure whether to take anti depressants as she is BF. she doesn't want to stop BF as this won't help her at all. Any views or experiences of which meds she can take safely?
Thanks in advance x

There are meds she can take. Can't think off hand but if either of you has a smart phone the 'lactmed' app is good

Also she can look on the BfN website on their drugs information factsheets. To see which ones are safe to take while breastfeeding. www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-in-breastmilk-information-and-factsheets

If she needs some sport they also have a drugs in breastmilk helpline.

Setraline, Citalopram, Fluroxitine, Valafaxine, and Duloxitine are all classed as safe when breastfeeding. Second the lactmed and drugs line suggestions.

Also worth suggesting to her to request counselling at the same time, as anti depressants are a very helpful tool, but not a fix it. A lot of children's centers also have PND support groups.

Hope she feels better soon. x

Thank you. Yes I will suggest children centre not thought of that! She will be pleased with the info as dr didn't seem too helpful x

I'm on Sertraline - as long as she says that she wants to continue BF the doctor will find her something that is suitable.

They've put her on seroxat

Tell her to prepare for a few weeks of side effects / possibly feeling worse whilst they get into her system, but within 6-8 weeks she should be feeling a bit more human.

Also tell her that if she doesn't like the way they make her feel (some people feel a bit hazey or sleepy on various meds) its perfectly okay to go and request a different one.

And tell her to get on here so we can help her!! Wink

Really that long? Dr told her 3-4 wks! Oh well she's made the first step by going thanks all x
