Six week old suddenly not hungry help

Ginga66 · 21/07/2012 07:38

My six week old usually wants to feed at least every two hours and the longest he has gone before is four. In the morning in particular he can have small feeds every hour. He is not a great latcher and only feeds for five mins but had gained four pounds plus since birth.
He has been jaundiced but bloods are fine and he had colic.
Last night he fed at around three then woke up at five but went back to sleep. Now he has woken at seven and was in pain colic like drawing legs up etc but I had to coax him for a good while to accept breast and he only had a small amount before sleeping. Should I worry. I am worrying what I mean is do I need to see dr or is this ok?

hi, fidgety feeding for a day or two may not mean anything to be alarmed about, but keep note of whether he is staying hydrated and seek help if you think he is short of fluids, or starts exhibiting any other signs of distress. sounds like you have had some experience of colic. some of my ebf babies were fine for the first few weeks, then had a couple of weeks of fussiness which seemed to sort itself out without me ever finding the answers. Even a few minutes of feeding will help with hydration if frequent. Be guided by the number and nature of wet nappies and certainly see a doctor if your concern deepens. sorry i can't help more, my thoughts are with you. Let us know how he goes?

How has he been for the rest of the day Ginga? Thought you might like to read this and this.

The feeding pattern you've described though sounds fine and babies often change their pattern once the 6 week growth spurt is out of the way.

Sorry, got called away there midpost. Obviously as cherry says, keep an eye on the number of wet nappies you have and if you are concerned about how the feeding has been today, perhaps give a BFC a call on one of the helplines like the National Breastfeeding Helpline Smile.

Whoops, really had better take better care with my linke Blush. Try the National Breastfeeding Helpline instead.

Hi jilted and cherry. Only just got chance to reply now. He fed at nineish but not with usual gusto but as day went on got better until he was back to feeding very often. However he was in a lot of pain with the colic so have been plying him with infacol.
Wet nappies resumed after a lull.
So relieved. When he refused and I posted this am I thought the world had ended. Was so afraid he was unwell. I feel he must be ok now he is feeding again? I wish I could get him on bottle as well, the pressure of being the only food source is worrying me. He only puts his mouth round my nipple not taking whole breast in but he is getting what He needs. However I feel his lack of gape means he gets air and that leads to colic maybe? I am worried the pain will put him off feeding and lead to oral aversion or whatever it's called.
I will look at links now and call helpline.
One more thing, is it normal to get colic in day as well as night as usually he had just had the issue in the evening.

Jilted,

I read the articles they were very interesting. He does not seem to fit into any pattern in particular but I am going to go back to the gp. Unfortunately the response from my gp has been of the 'he will grow out of it' variety.
I wish I had kept a diary but will start one now.
He seems to cry during or straight after feeding which I think rules out lactose intolerance. He does not cry after every feed, he was unhappy after most feeds today but managed one or two ok.
He does cry every day though and only just become daytime as well.
I wonder is it better to carry on as normal and keep diary or to cut out some foods to see if that is the problem, the page on the elimination diet did not load unfortunately.
I feel a bit better armed with info thanku.

Ginga know what you mean about feeling the world has ended but he seems back on track now.

Did you call the helpline, and if so, what did they say.
