How long do you spend BF'ing your new born?

My DS is 3 weeks old and I was wondering, how long do you all spend BF'ing?
He will be on the first breast about 45 mins or so, then around another 15 mins on the second. Is this normal?

My ds is 11 weeks and can be anything from a quick 15 minutes to an hour and a half. I think it is normal but every baby is different.

You will find I think that the feed times change according to the time of day. Eg, ds will take a massive feed first thing and last thing, but then tends to "snack" through the day, and stay topped up.

Keep going though, sounds like you're doing really well Grin

Thanks Babylon 1. Just seems like feeding is forever, especially when you include a nappy change in-between etc, it can easily be a good hour and a half! Will keep going.

sounds within the normal range. I take it baby is gaining well doing loss odd wet nappies and your not in any pain?

They do trend to get efficient as they get older.

It takes a long time to feed and change a newborn. I remember it took 2.5 hours to feed and change both my twins, then I'd pop to the loo, make a cup of tea and start again Grin I got some sleep if I skipped the loo and tea and someone else did the nappy changes!

It is relentless, but they do get faster. I remember a significant improvement at about 9 weeks (though lots of people say 6 weeks, so maybe I took longer to get into the swing of things with two), and then at 4 months it was like a switch had been thrown and feeds suddenly took no more than 5 mins. At that point you really feel like you've been given back your day and can get so much more done. I do sometimes feel nostalgic for those early feeding-filled days when I did nothing but care for my babies :)

As long as the weight gain is good and the wet nappies keep coming, you're doing a grand job. Take care of yourself in the small gaps you get and remember that housework will wait Wink

I had the iPhone app that tracks feeds and I was spending three hours a day in total feeding at that point. I just gave into it. TV on and always made a Brew before getting started!

I stopped using the app after a while as she had speeded up so much and now she is 8mo she has 4 feeds a day and takes hardly anytime. The rest of the time she now expects me to entertain her!

I would say that's pretty average, babymay. The baby at this age typically stops for a moment/slows down, has a little doze, starts again, without actually stopping properly.

DS1 fed all the bloody time. One day I remember he was latched on for 16 hours out of 24. But I later found out he was tongue tied.

DS2 took about half an hour, every two hours when he was little.
