Yes, only very minute amounts will be passed to the baby in breastmilk, but don't take if asthmatic or allergic (unless your doctor has advised) look \link{http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/supporterline/medication.php\here}

ibuprofen is actually really good for mastitis, as it reduces the inflamation as well as painkilling. Defo safe.

Yes, both paracetemol and Ibuprofen are safe with bf. But NOT aspirin. Bad for mother and baby.

Really? When I wanted to stop bf suddenly with DS and my boobs went like Dolly Parton LOL MV said amongst other things - take Neurofen BUT DO NOT take it if you are not sure about giving up bf as once you take it you CAN NOT bf. Neurofen is Ibuprofen isn't it?

poppiesinaline · 04/03/2006 16:13

MW that was meant to be!

koolkat · 04/03/2006 17:30

poppie - the words "elbow" and "arse" come to mind when we are talking mv + bf Grin

Yes the two meds. are the same, just different brand names.

My mw said there was absolutley NOTHING I could take when I was badly constipated a few days after birth as I was bf. Load of rubbish I later found out after alot of unnecessary suffering !

It turns out very minute amounts of meds. get into the bm.

If in doubt about any meds, see kellymom.com for a full list of meds. said to be safe when bf by the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP).

I have a copy of the list at hand and always take it to GP when I am ill, incase she prescribes something not on the list, I whip the list out !

My son is 20 months old now and because of this list I have been able to take cough meds, painkillers, sleeping tablets, you name it, while bf-ing him.

Actually I am appalled that the NHS does not have or give out such a list to ALL health profs. It seems to be bloody necessary as I am sure there are women who have given up bf simply because some moron told them to stop bf while taking meds.

Rant over Grin

PMSL at 'elbow' and 'arse'

Dish out that list! It does make me wonder if MW and HV go on a course of 'how to dish out as much crap info as poss'!!! Grin

poppie - LOL

Yes, they probably do it's called:
"How NOT to Help Women Breastfeed"

Gosh, I am probably going to get sued by the NHS now !
