Reflux suddenly back again - why?

I posted on here when LO was a few weeks old and suffering from (I now know) the bog standard wind/immature gut etc and got some very helpful advice from everyone, so hoping you can guide me again now!

DD had some silent reflux symptoms but they seemed to subside at about 8wks. She's now 4 months and the symptoms have reappeared this week - vomiting an hour or so after a feed, wet hiccups/burps, acidic breath, uncomfortable on her back, chewing on her fingers to the point that she has choked on them a couple of times.

I wondered why the symptoms would suddenly appear again or what causes them to get worse?

Dd2's reflux only really showed itself at 10 weeks or so. Doctors have no real explanation other than I am ebf so bm may have masked cmpi in a way.

I have heard 4 months is a real 'time' for bad reflux which is certainly true for us!

She is on omeprazole now.

Good luck reflux is hard

Thanks pommedechoc. I didn't realise it was something that developed at 4m. Poor things, they have a lot to contend with at this age! Weirdly, she's been better today, but then again, she's been upright for most of the day.

I don't think its severe enough to turn to drugs yet, esp when I've heard Gaviscon is such a pita to give to them and isn't very effective either.

Gaviscon is really hard to give to an ebf bottle refusing baby I found!

My 9 wk old DD has reflux and we've found gaviscon really effective and it's got to be less harsh than the other drugs.

My son's silent reflux only kicked in at week thirteen--five days after his first set of vaccines. Did your baby have shots recently? Teething can also aggravate symptoms of reflux.

PickledLily · 19/07/2012 07:34

It's reassuring to hear Gaviscon working, all the comments on here seem to be so negative about it.

She is teething at the moment, so that could be the trigger. She's not had jabs for a while, so I don't think that is it in her case.

I may go back to the GP again, the HVs certainly don't seem to have a clue about it (friend was told her DC didn'thave reflux because she wasn't losing weight Hmm)

We found Gaviscon worked fine and is easy to administer with a syringe. We're still using it and DS (now 9mo) loves to hold the syringe and help to administer it. When we used a low tension syringe he just used to suck the Gaviscon out and weirdly found that really exciting and it made him giggle lots!

Grin at baby helping itself to the syringe!

Thanks all, that's been very helpful and reassuring.
