SMA Milk

Hi all!

I have just joined after what has been a hectic day. My little man, Daniel woke up with a prickly heat sort of rash all over his tummy and hives on his back. Now my first instinct told me not to panic too much as he was his bouncy self, smiling, babbling away and trying to steal his daddy's glasses before he went to work. However I thought it may be something to do with his milk. We have just changed him over from SMA Gold First Milk to SMA Follow On Milk as he is being weaned so we thought it was best. We changed him over last week and he seemed to be taking it ok.

Thankfully I got an appointment at my docs this morning as I believed it to be best to get this checked out even though he didn't seem to be affected by it, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Anyway the doc confirmed my suspicions as Danny hadn't eaten anything he hasn't already had since we started weaning him he suspected it was most likely the milk and told me to switch him back to SMA Gold for a few days.

My question to any mum out there with a similar experience or who knows a bit more about the milk than I do, can Dan remain on the SMA Gold for the first year or will I have to switch him over and find a milk that suits him now he is weaning?

Thanks

First stage milk is fine for the duration, aye.

Follow on milk is a bit of a con, tbh.

Hope your Dan is soon.

Thanks

He's great, he's snoozing away after practising crawling on his tummy!

Hi

Great name!!

My 6mo Danny is also on sma and ive been thinking about switching to follow on for a few weeks. Because he's had the odd constipated weeks I'm going to keep him on first milk I think.

MumofDantheMan · 16/07/2012 15:15

Thanks!

See Dan has been great on SMA Gold we've never had any problems but since we moved him over he had this rash and I just don't think it is worth it. If he can stay on SMA Gold for the first year then I'll keep him on it. I was hesitant to move him over to the Follow On but my husband thought it best. Should always remember mum knows best hahaha!

Follow on is just something they have invented so that they can advertise and get their brand name on telly and in the magazines as they can't advertise first milk. There's no need to go on to follow on milk if you don't want to. Does it cost more? I'd bet it does - and they have cleverly made people think it is necessary to change over at 6 months.

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 15:24

My DD is on the follow on sma one. It actually costs less as they are allowed to do special offers on follow on milk.

But yes you can keep him on the gold for the year :)

MumofDantheMan · 16/07/2012 15:38

Thanks for the advice guys it has really put my mind as ease that I am doing the right thing keeping my wee man on SMA Gold for the year. Follow On does cost less but if it doesn't suit it doesn't suit :-)

Have you tried a different bend of follow on milk? IME SMA is very strong, even my HV said this, I used it t the start but it constipated dd, and brought her out in a rash on her bum. I them moved to aptimil which was fine but cost too much and now I'm using hipp organic follow on milk which is only £7.44. As its organic it's naturally more gentle and I only use follow on because it's cheaper and supermarkets do offers on them, enriched with iron which babies can be lacking at 6 months.

Tangointhenight · 16/07/2012 15:56

*brand not bend

MigGril · 16/07/2012 17:45

The iron thing is a con to. There is more then enough iron in first formulas for babies up to 12 months. The extra iron in follow on is mainly there as it has to be significantly different from first milks. A lot of babies seem to get constipated on it and to much iron can be bad for you in other ways to.

Tangointhenight · 16/07/2012 20:20

Where's the con when it's actually cheaper?? It can only be a con if it's wheedling more money out of you whereas most follow ons, with the exception of the extortionate aptimil, are actually cheaper than first milks.

Many toddler milks work out cheap pint by pint than cows milk too.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 16/07/2012 20:26

It's just that they are slightly different as by law they cannot market first milk, that's all.

It's actually cheaper as you can sometimes get deals clubcard points etc.

It's true though that it's no better than first milk. I think it's personal choice, if it suits your baby and you can get deals then fine.

I read loads into it and apparently extra iron not needed but ds was great on follow on so I used it as though just as well if it's cheaper and essentially same!

Tangointhenight · 16/07/2012 20:28

Yeah pickles that's why I used it too, I think it's the same as first milk in that you have to try a few before you find the right one!

MigGril · 16/07/2012 20:38

I said the extra iron is a con as it isn't a health benefit and can in some case cause problems. The only reason why it's cheaper is they can put offers on it.
You've got to remember these companies are looking for brand loyalty, if you bye follow you may bye their toddler milks. They are only trying to make as much money a possible just like any other business. They will only follow the minimum laws they have to anything else goes.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 16/07/2012 20:40

Agree gill re branding but I saw nothing to saw follow on milk iron could be bad for them - if I had I wouldn't have used it.

I didn't say it was better just gentler!! Well it was for my dd who had reflux. :o

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 16/07/2012 20:56

I made a cup of tea with it once out of desperation. Didnt taste gentle! Gak gak!

Tangointhenight · 16/07/2012 21:00

I know it's vile, I was opening a carton with my teeth when we were out one time I'd forgot scissors and it went in my mouth....boooookkkkeeee!

MumofDantheMan · 16/07/2012 22:01

I had to taste Daniel's milk when my husband and I were going through security in the airport on the way to his parents it was vile, have no idea how Daniel can drink the stuff suppose he knows no different, although some of the fruit purees I have made him are quite yummy as a combination1

The NHS don't recommend you use anything other then first infant milk for the first 12 months. www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/types-of-infant-formula.aspx

Tangointhenight · 16/07/2012 23:20

I didn't take it to mean that, as I understand what they are saying is that first milk can be used for the first year and basically follow on is no different and there is no evidence to suggest its more suitable. Nowhere does it say that the NHS recommends you stick to first milk specifically, just as long as you don't give follow on to a baby under 6 months.

MigGril · 17/07/2012 07:07

That's the general info in the more detailed leaflet I have they say they only recommend the use of first infant formula, and you right it does just say there are no heath benefits to follow on. But this is a relatively new product formula companies have a right to do what they call in market testing so there has been no testing of this product before going to market to make sure there are no possible problems with it. Therefore they are using the whole market as a testing bed. Not something I'd want to do. At lest first infant formula has been around at lot longer and we know more about the possible risks.
That also applies when ever they add any new indents to first formula to, although the content is quit highly regulated for.
