i'm pretty sure someone on here can confirm this for me. or maybe i dreamt it up?
i was in my local branch of Boots today and they had formula on a sale shelf. (they had jars of baby food too)is this illegal? i didn't want to say anything in case i was talking rubbish.

Yes afaik but it may well have been shortdated , not that that is a good excuse to flaunt the law.

Miaou · 03/03/2006 17:27

Was is deffo formula and not follow-on milk? If formula, yes it's illegal. If follow-on, no it's not (I think - hunker is the expert on this Wink)

queenrollo · 03/03/2006 17:31

not sure to be honest if it was just formula or follow on, but i do know there were several varieties and big boxes of powder as well as ready made cartons.
i'll await hunkers expert advice and then go back to Boots (if i get time!) and check.

If it was formula, then it is definately illegal. No breastmilk substitute (anything that replaces breastmilk in under 6 month olds) can be sold in any way that draws attention to it. So no sales, reduced stickers, big notices drawing attention to it etc.

Boots are notorious for ignoring the law on this and have been told by trading standards before. But it never makes a diference.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 03/03/2006 18:24

I have bought reduced in price formula (ready made) cartons from Boots and reduced baby food in jars. The sales assistant said it was reduced because the shop was relocating (which it was).

I didnt mind as I got lots of things for half price. I only bought things that I usually buy, but at a cheaper price.

Didnt know this was 'illegal'. Strangest thing I have ever heard!

harpsichordcarrier · 03/03/2006 18:25

yes it's illegal
I'll try and find a link

satine · 03/03/2006 18:26

That is just plain odd.

harpsichordcarrier · 03/03/2006 18:29

\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1364&threadid=138345\here's a previous thread explaining the reasons}

Flossam · 03/03/2006 18:32

Not strange. If selling 1st milk could be construed as trying to encourage people to bottle feed babies.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 03/03/2006 18:57

Is selling reduced/sale nursing bras illegal? It might encourage me to breast feed Wink

harpsichordcarrier · 03/03/2006 18:59

If it made the difference mffaft I would happily send you some of my bras? Smile

mumfor1standfinaltime · 03/03/2006 19:10

Think 14 months is a bit late to start! Smile
Only wish I had...Sad

laughalot · 03/03/2006 19:23

I used to give my ds cow and gate organic and when they were changing the packaging boots and tescos both reduced the price from £ 6.99 to about £ 3.49 i had no complaints

Elf1981 · 03/03/2006 19:24

I thought it was illegal to advertise that formula was reduced? IIRC somebody who works in a shop told me that they can reduce formaul / follow on milk but they cannot advertise it, by stickers on the packets / adverts on the way into the shop / price tickets etc. ATEOTD nobody takes much notice of the price on a week by week basis, such as if I was walking by formula milk at the beginning of Feb, I wouldn't walk by it in March and know the price was different.
I may be wrong, but that's my understanding.
At the end of the day, it's never going to beat the price of breastmilk :)

laughalot · 03/03/2006 19:35

Thats true about breastmilk but my ds refused to and it broke my heart

SoupDragon · 03/03/2006 19:53

No, it's illegal to reduce the price, not just advertise the fact. That's why on the back of all your money off vouchers like Tescos clubcard ones it says "can not be used agaist infant milk"

ShaysMummy · 03/03/2006 19:55

if you do go back queenrollo, please pick me up a cpw & gate box. cheers! :o

popsycalindisguise · 03/03/2006 20:04

I hcompained to mothercare for doing this (and caused a controversial thread on here...)
it is illegal

staceym11 · 03/03/2006 20:32

my dd refused breastmilk even when it was expressed ( and this was before she had had formula ) i would have been greatful for reduced price formula when i was no longer eligible for milk tokens as dp'd wage went up to 14k a year, which is still bugger all for all intents and purposes.

i dont really understand how it can promote bottle feeding rather than breast unless they gave it away free as breast milk is free??? strange way of thinking as far as im concerned!

moondog · 03/03/2006 20:33

Heeeeeere we go...............

tissy · 03/03/2006 20:34

stacey, have a look at the other thread, it's all explained there!Smile

starlover · 03/03/2006 20:42
