dd3 is 5 weeks old and totally breast fed, every evening when she cluster feeds she ends up getting herself really distressed and almost fights with my breast, struggles to latch on, when normally she has no problem with this, she eventually calms down but i cant for the life of me figure out what its all about, does anyone else have experience of this?
thanks

Could be she is getting tired and maybe a bit overstimulated by the end of the day? Lots of young babies find it hard to latch on when they're wide awake, in fact some feed a lot better when they are actually asleep!

Couple of things that might help ...

  • Try feeding in a different position - laid-back is fantastic for babies who are fighting the breast - see here for video
  • Try a calmer atmosphere for the evening cluster feeds - e.g. turn the lights right down, nice and quiet etc
  • Make sure she is having naps in the daytime and try to avoid too much stimulation in the afternoons.

There are at least a few of us that are or have been in the same boat mrsshears, you are not alone!

Theres a thread that sounds pretty similar called cluster feeding rage.

My DD2 has very similar issues and hers is caused by trapped wind.

I had a similar issue at around 3 weeks with my ds3, who had fed like a dream from birth. Couldn't work it out. A couple of days on I realised I had thrush in my nipple. Checked babies mouth and there was a covering of white on roof of his mouth. The problem ceased after about 12 hours of treatment. Seemed that he was annoyed by the pain/irritation. Worth checking her mouth out for any signs.
