Is 15 minutes on 1 breast a 'good' feed for a newborn?

DS is 1 week old today and after a shaky start (was too sleepy to feed but has woken up a bit now) is feeding every 2 - 2.5 hours for roughly 15 minutes a time. This doesn't sound like a lot I know but I have a massive supply of milk (he literally gets squished the second my boob appears) and he is having plenty of wet/ dirty nappies and seems generally content.

Reading this back I know I would be saying 'yes that's fine' if it was me replying but I guess I just need the reassurance. DS was only 6lb 3oz born and slightly prem (35.5 weeks) so I'm keen to make sure we don't let him get weak or lose weight.

Squirted, not squished! Grin

Well my knowledge may be a bit out of date given my youngest is now almost adult, but I recall 15 being fine at that age. I seem to remember 15 each side by about 6 weeks.

Snow - it's fine if milk is being transferred effectively....and that's the only criteria. The clock does not come into it.

Can you midwife not build your confidence a bit with an observation of a feed and other checks your baby is doing fine?

Criterion, of course, I mean :) :)

Thank you both!

I will ask the midwife when I see her on Thursday but thank you for your reassurances for now Smile

Ds1 never fed for more than 10 mins but was fine and healthy, letdown was just very fast. I used to be quite jealous of other mums getting to sit down and drink coffee for 30 mins or even an hour!
