Kettle that boils at 70 degrees

I have a new kettle, and you can set it to boil at 70/80/90 or 100 degrees. I like my coffee at 90 degrees (and hot choc at 80), not 100, which is why I got it, but it struck me that it would be very useful for anyone needing water at 70 degrees for formula feeds. It wouldnt be any use. water for formula needs to have been boiled at 100.

Ah, I see, to have killed the bugs off. Never mind!

Water won't boil below 100. That's what boiling is, when water reaches 100. It will only simmer at a lower temp.

It will only boil at 70C up a very substantial mountain!

You can use non boiled water after 6 months though, as long as it's over 70 to kill the bugs in the powder.

I have something a bit similar, not sure what brand, and you can set it to boil (to 100) and then 'hover' at a specific temperature as it cools - and it beeps at you when it reaches the correct temperature. Or you can reheat it slightly if it's got a bit cold - say from 60 to 70, much more precise than just boiling and forgetting leaving it for a bit.

It is bloody genius and has saved my sanity with making feeds for 2. I suspect you can do something similar with this one - that's probably what the 'keep warm' function is.

My health visitor told me that the water needs to be at 70 degrees to kill possible bugs in formula. I am planning to buy this kettle to use for making feeds for twins. My idea was that I will keep a big bottle of previously boiled & cooled water in the fridge, then put this water into the kettle for feeds & set the kettle to stop at 70 degrees - so that I can make the feeds and not have to wait a long time for them to cool.

Are there any flaws in this plan? Please tell me if there are because this has been my plan for a while and I am hoping it will save my sanity when I am up making night feeds...

Digestives, your plan sounds good to me. As your health visitor so rightly says, water needs to be at over 70 degrees to kill the bugs in the formula powder.

However, would it be worth making the kettle boil at 80 degrees instead? - presumably the water will cool below 70 as it hits the powder, so might not kill all the bugs?

green bananas - good point. That kettle does 80 as well so then I can be extra sure.
