Is this DD starting to give up bfing? <sob>

DD is 16 mo and is still on 2 bfs a day (1st thing and last thing). Ever since she was teeny she had one last feed before bed where she fed herself to sleep and we move her sleeping into her cot.

In the last week or so she's been having her feeds but more often than not it doesn't send her to sleep (but she does go to sleep in her cot straight after if we put her in).

Just wondered if this is the start of her weaning herself off bfing of just a new stage?

I wouldn't have thought that alone would mean the end of bfing. My DD is 11mo and still on 4 or 5 bfs a day. She stopped feeding to sleep at bedtime when she was around 4mo.

Really? . The past few days she has barely fed at all (length wise) but I've been unwell and haven't eaten much so I'm just putting it down to there not being much milk there to take...

Yes, we have at various points broken the link between feeding and sleep, sometimes naturally, sometimes at my insistence. And we're still going at 25 months.

This happened with my DD1 as well and she's still going strong at 3.9yo. I miss the days of being able to BF her to sleep. Grin

I doubt that a couple of days of illness will have knocked your supply, it's pretty well established by now (unless you took any decongestants?). It could be that she's just got more efficient or that she just wanted to touch base rather than a full meal. Is she eating much solid food? You can always offer more if you're worried about her stopping.

  • I always bump into you when I post on here Grin . She is indeed eating lots of solid foods - she always seems to be eating or asking for food!! I guess in my head my goal was to bf her to 2 and then see how and if to progress from there but I never contemplated until this morning that she might stop herself before then Blush Shock

Ooh, I didn't even spot your username- how are things? Can't believe they are 16 months already! You are doing really well to still be BF. It is rare for them to self-wean this young.

ChunkyPickle · 10/07/2012 12:45

Nahhhh - I still BF to sleep for naps, but aaages ago he decided that he wanted to have a feed, then head over to his own bed to fall asleep in the evening - he's 22 months ish now.

I reckon you have a while yet (assuming you're met with the same enthusiasm I am)

Good thanks, I can't believe its 16 months either, gone so quickly (well, in fairness time couldn't go much slower for me than when pg!)
