Thrush in bf baby?

Alwaysroomforpudding · 09/07/2012 20:12

I've noticed a couple of white spots on the tongue of 2 month old DS. They been there for a couple of days and don't seem to wipe away with my finger so I'm wondering if it could be thrush. There's been no change in feeding and no pain for me but I'm wondering if I should get it checked out to try to preempt any problems? The thing is that the spots are quite far back on his tongue so it could be tricky for anyone else to get a look!

Defo get it checked out, it could be nothing but if it is thrush, the GP will give him some drops and thats that. But if you leave it too long it could transfer to your nipples and trust me you do not want that.

My DS is 2 months also and my/our thrush is just coming back Sad he's on anti-biotics so is prone to thrush. The pain plus the itching almost made me stop breastfeeding altogether.

Thanks Ruby, I think I'll try and see a GP tomorrow.

Ok, I'm back. I saw the GP and DS does indeed have thrush in his mouth. The GP gave me nystatin suspension to treat it but I'm having trouble administering it! Does anyone have any tips? I'm squirting it in with a syringe but he hates it and pretty much all of it is being spat back out.

I've also got some cream for my nipples too to prevent reinfection.

Always it's a pain isn't it! At 2 weeks old, DS was pushing the nurse's hand away when she was trying to give it to him Grin.

Try doing it a tiny bit at a time (so he doesn't have anything significant to spit back out IYSWIM?) and I think aiming for the inside of the cheek?

igggi · 11/07/2012 18:57

A nurse at bf clinic told me to apply little bits using a cotton bud to the inside of his cheeks and gums at top and bottom, and give him the rest of the dose with spoon or syringe. She also said I should wipe my nipples with the same stuff. Really hope it works!

Nystatin isn't the best course of treatment :-( Look here and see that Daktarin Oral Gel is what you should have been given.

DS and I had thrush when he was 5 weeks and it went on and on for weeks. We started with Nystatin for him and daktarin cream for me and it just didn't shift. Finally I got some kind of pill from the gp, not antibiotics but something similar (forgotten name but began with P) and this finally shifted it. Wash bras, muslins, anything that has touched your nipples or his mouth at 60 degrees as well. Good luck and be persistent with gps if it doesn't shift. You shouldn't suffer.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I saw that BFN leaflet ... after my GP appointment... so am a bit annoyed that I've got the wrong stuff. Especially as it's so difficult to apply. Good tip about the cotton buds though, I'll try that. Having said I had no symptoms myself, I'm now feeling quite itchy so I'm a bit worried. I think I'll see how we get on tomorrow then maybe see the GP again on Friday if it's not improving. I think I'll also go along to see the lovely lady at our local bf drop-in just for some support!

Take the leaflet to the GP with you and give them the "for professionals" bit! Make sure that you get Daktarin cream as well (even if you have no symptoms) or you will constantly re infect each other.

igggi · 11/07/2012 22:49

I've been given the same stuff as OP buy gp. Bf clinic suggested it too. (Hoping not entirely crap)

igggi · 11/07/2012 22:59

Have noticed daktarin gel not recommended under 4 months, so maybe that's why. Let's hope we all get better soon either way.

Bert2e · 12/07/2012 16:19

PLEASE read the BfN leaflet - it explains exactly why the gel isn't licensed for under 4m but why it should be first choice.

igggi · 12/07/2012 20:11

Says there's a risk of choking.

Bert2e · 13/07/2012 15:56

Only if incorrectly applied.

igggi · 17/07/2012 18:05

Just to say I've still got traces of thrush after a week of nystatin - saw gp today and have got daktarin to try, hoping it does the business!

Spaghettivongole · 17/07/2012 20:04

Sorry to hear that Iggi, that is annoying. I hope the Daktarin works. Weirdly, ours cleared up in a couple of days - I think maybe we caught it early on? Anyway at least I've got the drugs on hand if it cones back!
