New baby has tongue tie -what to do?

Okay. New baby is 3 weeks old and has tongue tie. It isn't severe but it is there. Mws and HV say he hasn't got tongue tie (although I never actually raised it with them. They looked in his mouth and just declared he didn't.

Now, this is my third baby with tt. My plan, was to grin and bare the soreness and frequent feeds until his mouth was a bit bigger and we had established our own optimal feeding arrangement, which is what I did with the others (well Ds went on formula for a bit of the day until 6 weeks.). I do appear to be blessed with iron nipples.

However, I've changed my mind and want to get this addressed. How do I go about it?

OH hope they ring back.

I would try giving them a call on the number that went to fax earlier - it may be that they will be around tonight if they are snipping.

actually that link suggests the clinic is on a thursday afternoon. Which could be good news for you.

Hope you can get it sorted, think my ds might have a slight one too but the pain isn't too bad atm so am just seeing how it goes.

Not sure if anyone has posted this list of places you can get tongue tie divided..

Could you maybe pick up the DCs from school a bit earlier? I am sure the school would understand. I seem to remember it was dark when we went to the clinic, so must have been after about 4.30 pm (it was winter).

Best of luck.

did you leave a message on the breastfeeding line? I know if you ring the NCT or BfN helplines they will always ring back if you leave a message. You have to remember they are all volunteers so can't always answer first time.

DD was tongue tied. It was picked by post-natal mw whilst I was still in hosp. They gave me some contact no's and we arranged to get it sorted asap as bf was tricky.

We had to pay £90 and we opted for a qualified lact. consultant. It was the quickest option. You can fet it done at hospital, although i think its done in special clinics in the evening and you have to pay. Got it done when DD was 5 days old. Apparently the earlier you get it done the less painful it is (not sure how true that is). They don't use any local anaesthetic.

It was really straightforward and done in seconds. I had to start bf and then squeeze a few drops onto a sterile pad. DD started crying a little when I stopped feeding and they laid her on the clinic bed with the sterile pad next to her head (so she could still 'smell' me...all very new age i know!). 1 lady held her head and the other snipped. She barely raised an octave! They then put the pad with bm over the snip and bought her straight to me to carry on bf. There was a tiny amount of blood. Probably 2-3 spots.

There was a White spot under her tongue for about a week and I noticed the improvement in bf almost immediately!!

Hope you get it sorted.

Okay. Been on the ringaround and getting there - slowly, - but getting there.

Apparently guidelines/policies whatever have changed and lactation consultants cannot snip unless they are also a qualified health professional now.
