I am breast feeding my 9 day old baby boy, alls going well he latches on well takes his feeds for 15 to 40 mins, but since saturday he has brought his milk up three times and I dont know what to do.He gulps his milk really fast and gets hick ups so I then just wind him but how do I stop this? Also Im abit worried should I be feeding him again as he has brought his milk up.

sorry the questions may sound stupid but hes my first baby,it scared me abit.

Hi Missmatched, congrats on your new DS. That's brilliant that he's latching on well and feeding- it sounds like you are both learning the ropes pretty well :)

It's OK to offer another feed if he's been sick. You can offer to feed him any time you like, he will soon let you know whether he wants to or not.

The hiccups and fast gulping could be down to oversupply- not anything you are doing wrong, and there are a few things you can try to make things easier. Does any of this sound familiar?

Thanks for the reply eaurouge,no none of that sounds familiar, hes a relaxed baby,he has his dads temprement I think relaxed and chilled.

After he feeds he usually fills his nappy and he burps when he is being winded,my boobs are soft and I can usually tell which boob I need to feed him on next.He doesnt hic up straight away it can be like 30 mins later.

Do you think it might just be wind or something, its horriable not knowing whats wrong/causeing something to go wrong or not knowing how to fix it,I suppose I have this feeling for the rest of my life now.

I really wouldn't worry at all. I have 4 DC and while i wouldnt ever claim to know it all, i have learnt that they are very good at telling you when they need something, so if your bsby isnt screaming at you, you don't need to worry!

Remember what looks like loads of sick is probably just about a spoonful of milk - he'll let you know if he's hungry again! Or if you need to be sure, just offer it like the LP said and he'll take it if he's hungry. You can't over feed a BF baby.

Sounds like you're doing a great job, well done for BFing so well. And congratulations!! Smile

It could just be that he was a bit windy that day then. It's not unusual for babies to get windy and then be sick.

Don't worry, things do get easier. You are only 9 days in, no wonder you haven't found your feet yet! You'll get there, it sounds as though you are already getting to know your DS and what he needs. There's no right and wrong way to do things, you will be able to figure out before anyone else what makes him happy because you're his mother. :)

Maybe going to a breastfeeding group would help you build your confidence? Is there anything nearby you can get to once you feel ready to get out and about?

My DS went through a phase of this. I asked the HV & she just said he's stretching his tummy & not to worry.

Greedy little milk monster. Grin

OP you are not doing anything wrong.

DS is a very sicky baby - he will bring up milk (either watery or digested curdled stuff) after most feeds, and it varies from a tiny amount to what seems like quite a lot, but could only be max 15-20ml (so nowhere near a whole feed). Sometimes he does it straight after a feed, sometimes when he stirs for the next feed. He gets hiccoughs too.

I asked the neonatal nurses about it as I was worried, but they said some babies are just sicky, they should grow out of it. One of them thinks DS is just a piglet and takes on more than he can handle Grin. The neonatal doctor said there is no cause for concern, it's just a bit of a nuisance!

If he appears to be in pain / arching his back after a feed, I think they can be signs of reflux, so you could see your GP, but if not, I think it's just one of those things we have to live with until they grow out of it!

At the moment I have to change DS's clothes twice in the night as he is sick over himself and gets wet and therefore very cold. Poor baby Sad

Thanks for the replys ladies.I dont have much time to come on as I havnt sorted my routine out yet once I get my boy sorted I either log on and fall asleep or some bugger knocks at the door,I swear I want to out a sign up saying if you havnt arranged it dont knock,Im not really that mean I would just like someone to make me a cup of tea that I could finish for once.............oops sorry bit of track.

I got a call from homestart re breast feeding to arrange a visit from a peer and she said she could hear him guzzeling and commented about not worrying if he brings it back up as he was really going for it,I think I may need a technique to slow him down.they are coming tomorrow for his 12 o clockish feed.He slept through last night aswell, imagine my shock when I woke up at 8.45 am.
