What's this baby 'gazing into your eyes' stuff?

I keep reading about babies gazing into their mothers' eyes while breastfeeding. MY (14wo) DD has never does this - she looks anything but me when feeding: DH, the cat, something apparently fascinating on the bookshelf behind us, etc. Or her eyes are closed. Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone else's baby NOT gaze into their eyes?

When I bf dd, she never looked at me.

PorkyandBess · 07/07/2012 23:10

Mine did, for the first few months - then everything and anything else became more interesting.

Which is when I entered my 'spraying' period.

LadyWidmerpool · 07/07/2012 23:48

I get more of a baleful glare than a look of adoration.

Erm will have to check I'm too busy gazing at the iPhone to stay awake Blush

mirry2 · 08/07/2012 00:13

I used to get her little hand creeping up between my breasts. It was lovely.

SarryB · 08/07/2012 00:15

Mine stares at the cushions behind me. Or has his eyes closed. He stares at me like mad with a bottle though.

He does like to pummel my boobies though.

mirry2 · 08/07/2012 00:28

SarryB that's what a kitten does when feeding fromit's mother. I think it's to encourage milk flow. My cat kneeds my lap in the same way - she must think there's milk there somewhere

fedup2012 · 08/07/2012 00:29

The gazing happens when they're dropping off to sleep. That's the lovely bit.

TeacupTempest · 08/07/2012 20:44

She does now, at nearly 7 months, but previously she would often just stare at my breast.

Her first smile was directed at my boobs!

Her feeding position often doesn't really allow for much eye gazing.

ThisTimeNextYearRodney · 08/07/2012 20:48

Mine generally stare lovingly at my armpit when they're little, then twist round to look at everything else from about 5 months, stretching my nipple out like mr tickle's arms

Occasionally get a loving gaze at bedtime feed

TeaandHobnobs · 08/07/2012 20:50

DS looks rather suspiciously in my general direction out of the corner of his eye.

I'd be lucky to get eye contact ever, let alone when feeding!

CommanderShepard · 09/07/2012 09:37

I think I must have a really weird hold then, cos the Commanderling looks straight at my boob I do have quite sizeable ones though

I guess it's nowt to worry about, since her latch is good, but I always hold her at 90 degrees to my body so the top of her head's pointing towards my arm, but that's the way we've always done it. Possibly due to my c-section (rugby hold didn't work for us at all)

PastaLadyHasNameChangedForThis · 09/07/2012 09:45

Dd started the staring thing about 4 1/2 mo. Proper 'coo, am snuggly mummy' look too, with big doe eyes. We ff, but shes always had snuggly feeds in the same position as when we bfd at the start.

Pastabee · 09/07/2012 10:19

My DD does do this and when I notice I feel terribly guilty because I've been emailing or on MN. I only notice because she whacks me on the breastbone if she requires attention / wants to give me a milky smile

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 09/07/2012 14:28

Only when they were a lot older than 14 weeks...

ceeveebee · 09/07/2012 21:39

My DTs stare into each others eyes and hold hands, it's soo sweet

LilRedWG · 09/07/2012 21:40

If DS (17 months) looks into my eyes we both start giggling and milk spurts out of the corners of his mouth so it's not all it's made out to be.... :o
