Toddler acrobatics whilst feeding!

My 18 mth old DS has recently started twisted and turning over whilst feeding. he's not pulling away or off, but he seems to be trying to make himself comfortable... just taking my nipple with him as he contorts. It's almost as if he wants to feed like he did when he was really little, which was kind of diagonally down my body, rather than wrapped around it horizontally (IYSWIM), but he's way too big to do that without falling off my lap.

it's really uncomfortable and i feel rotten pulling him in and round and holding him there, just to try and keep him a bit more still to stop the pulling.

Does anyone have a baby that did/does this, and any ideas how to help him stop doing it?

I think it's quite common and normal. My 13 month old certainly does something similar and has been doing it for a while. She will sort of stand up and stick her bum in the air or wriggle about while feeding and her latest thing is 'singing' while she is latched on. I haven't stopped her (might regret that later, we'll see...) as it's really cute and I don't find it too uncomfortable. In her case i think it's just sort of trying different things out as opposed to anything else.

There's a link here about nursing manners that might help:

Dd3 does all sorts. I stop her doing one thing and she tries something else.
I take her off and don't feed her if she's messing.

I get this a lot with DD (22 months). Haven't figured a way of stopping her though I do take her off the boob if need be and limit the amount of time she feeds for - she also eats well generally so I can distract her with solids too, quite often. But mostly I'm afraid I grin and bear it... sorry, not helpful, and not necessarily my ideal either.

thanks all!

ust read the kellymom advice. i'm kind of doing all those little tricks, but maybe i'm not sticking to one firmly enough!

i think i might try the feeding necklace idea.

it's really tricky for the bedtime feeds, as I really don't want to stop and then come back again. he's a manic boy at bedtime, despite all the quiet stories i can muster!

Ds does it too. He's 12 months and a big boy. His favourite acrobatic trick is sticking his bum in the air or he's quite partial to sliding off my lap entirely, nipples still in mouth, and carrying on with the feeding whilst standing up. I haven't tried to stop him either but maybe i should! Wonder why they do it? Sounds like its pretty common too!
