Bf babies don't poo as much. We had 1 every other day for the first couple of weeks. As they take more milk they get more frequent. As long as he is having wet nappies then don't worry. Congrats by the way, boys are great!

Wants this is not right - newborns (and the OP's baby is 4 days) normally poo frequently, and if they don't it's a sign to check things out. It's misleading to say that wet nappies are the only thing to be worried about at this stage - less frequent pooing is only usual once the baby is a few weeks old.

belindarose , all may be well, but long gaps between poos in a baby this age are something to watch....usually this resolves itself once the milk is in and the baby is feeding effectively.

NCT have a factsheet on this. You can get a text version of it here:

Give the midwife a call. If your baby has been feeding well, then all is prob ok. It would be a good idea to have your baby weighed today or tomorrow, though.

Thanks. He's had one now and is being reweighed tomorrow. Having to wake him for feeds today but doing so frequently.

if your milk has only just come in, you won't have many dirty nappies.
once he's feeding more, you'll get plenty.

i think we were told 10 nappies a day (including wet and pooey), but we changed dd about 5-6 times a day.

nickelbarapasaurus · 07/07/2012 16:23

sorry, all of DD's nappies had poo in.

tiktok all 3 of my babies didn't poo loads and mw and hv were never concerned. If baby is showing signs of discomfort then get them checked but OP didn't say this was the case.
Glad to hear your baby performed belindarose :)

Glad your babies were fine, wanst3 but I stand by my post.

Nothing to do with signs of discomfort; lack of poo in a newborn is not a sign of being 'constipated' but it can be a sign of insufficient feeding/poor milk transfer - there is loads of research showing this, and quite a few experiences on mumsnet.

tik :) luckily OPs milk has come in now so she should see an improvement in poo performance!

Dd2 (6 weeks) had only 1 poo a week for her first 3-4 weeks. My milk was late coming in, she was jaundice and lost weight.

While she was fine it was a sign that breast feeding for her was slow getting started and although HV was not massively concerned as it does happen it was something to keep an eye on to check its not indicative of a problem.

The limit is 7-10 days before I was to be referred to peads to have her checked, she just pooed in the nick of time each week!

So what I'm saying is it can be normal for slow starters or it can be a sign of a problem most likely poor milk/latch/transfer or something (constipation is unlikely in bf). So make sure your HV/MW is aware but don't panic and let it worry you into ff because it just takes time. With dd1 she was the same and I panicked into ff too early.
