Help! My 14wo DD is poorly. She had a temp of 39.5 last night. NHS direct told me to feed her often to keep fluids up so I have been but now by boobs feel really empty and she's getting frustrated. Any tips? Should I go and get some formula or give her some water?

no just keep feeding your supply will adjust and breast milk is the best thing for your poorly baby.
She could just be fussy because she's ill lots of cuddles and comfort.it is hard but sometimes there isn't much you can do.

MarathonMama · 07/07/2012 12:45

Thanks MigGril but won't it take days for my supply to adjust by which time I won't need the extra milk?

At 14 weeks your supply is well established. It won't take days to improve - just feed, often, and my guess is things will feel better by later today :)

the more you feed the more you make - even during a feed. :)

she's just probably feeling rubbish and the fussing is because no matter what she odes, she feels icky.

That's a very high fever for a tiny baby. I'd get her checked over by the out of hours. I hope all is well.

tiktok · 07/07/2012 19:01

I agree, Lady - if the fever is still as high, baby prob needs a doctor (hopefully NHS Direct has also said that).

BillyBollyBandy · 07/07/2012 19:05

Silly question - have you given her Calpol to get her temp down?

ShowOfHands · 07/07/2012 19:06

A baby that young with a temp that high does need checking over.

But yes to feed feed feed. BM is all you need.

MarathonMama · 07/07/2012 19:07

The fever has come right down but she's been throwing up. I think it's probably the stomach bug that they've had at DD1's nursery.

Interestingly I thought the temp was really high too but NHS Direct didn't seem too concerned, even though she was crying inconsolably and in a high pitched way. Luckily a dose of Calpol and DH's patience with a dummy eventually calmed her down. I'm dreading tonight though.

did you take her to the GP today?
is she any better?

MarathonMama · 09/07/2012 19:37

No, she was back to herself today, no temperature and her usual smiley self. A big relief! I assume it was one of those 24-48 hour viral things.

Thanks for asking nickel, that's very kind.
