co-amoxyclav & bf newborn

Hi all, just wanted a bit of moral support/advice.

DS is 5 days old, am EBF & milk has just come in (yesterday). I had a pretty horrendous labour and delivery - keillands forceps, episiotomy etc and now to top it all have been diagnosed with a postnatal infection and prescribed co-amoxyclav.

My GP originally prescribed as low a dose as she could and I took one dose yesterday evening. I then ended up seeing the out of hours GP as my temp skyrocketed and he has basically doubled my prescription, saying the original dose is too low to be effective.

I know I need to take the meds - I've been feeling truly dreadful and don't want to get worse- but I feel so worried about how they are going to effect my baby, he has already had two horrible, mucousy diarrhoea nappies and I've only taken one dose.

Basically, has anyone else had anything similar? Was your LO ok? I feel so worried as DS is SO v little & keep thinking about his poor little digestive system just forming :( I've read a few old threads but the babies were all a fair bit older. I can't bear the thought of hurting him.

I'm just so upset that this had to happen on top of everything else, just as we were making a go of the feeding :(

Congratulations!
As a midwife i see co-amoxiclav (augmentin) used alot.it will help heal your infection and won't harm your baby.you might notice a change in nappies which will last until a few days after you stop taking it.the change in nappies you have noticed sounds normal-they would have been changing colour anyway and it is a sign that your baby is starting to digest your milk.
Any antibiotic can trigger thrush so you may want to consider starting bio yoghurts or good bacteria drinks.symptoms don't usually appear for a week-sore nipples especially towards end of a feed, baby having sore bottom.it is treated with cream from g.p. or chemist.x

Thanks so much for the reply, I'll look out for the thrush symptoms, and starting a supplement is a good idea - i'll do that too.

I feel a bit reassured, I've been so teary and emotional about it all its been hard to think clearly.

Congrats on your little one & sorry you had a difficult birth. I had a similar labour 12 weeks ago. Feeling emotional is totally normal & does go.

I was given co-amoxyclav both IV & then an extra weeks course which did the job. DS had similar nappy issues & lots of wind but was fine. What is that & all the pain killers I felt awful for him as I wasn't at all as I had planned but needs must.

Unfortunately we developed thrush so from 6 weeks onwards we were advised to give him baby probiotics which helped settle his tummy. I also took them & wish I'd done it sooner. Those first six weeks were tough byt it does get better. Smile

I took this when DS was 10 days old or so. At 6 weeks he seems fine, I never noticed any symptoms apart from possibly a bit of nappy rash (this cleared up with Sudocrem). I was advised by BF counsellor to take probiotic tablets (about £10 from Holland and Barratt) as these are much more powerful than the drinks and am still taking these.

I've just finished a course of augmentin dd is 19do she is fine and is all the better for having a healthier mum! Dont worry you and baby should be fine, but yes definitely take a pro biotic.

I had it when DS was very little (well, he was 9lb at birth, so not that little) and had the bad nappies, but otherwise he thrived and is still thriving nearly 3 years on... def recommend probiotics though, thrush on tattered bits and newly raw nipples would be unpleasant.

hope you're ok soon, I'm 3 weeks on from a kiellands delivery and slowly starting to feel better!
