Thrush- what does it feel like and should i seek treatment?

My baby(4 wks) has white coating on her tongue, but only her tongue. Thick but not really like the fungal mould in the google images of oral thrush. I get quite a lot of pain, like i imagine aninjection into the nipple would feel, but more when not feeding than when she is feeding. It comes in clusters, 15 mins or so after i stop feeding.

Does this sound like thrush? Should it be treated? Baby seems happy.

Thanks for advice.

There's more info about thrush diagnosis on the Breastfeeding Network site

The pain after feeding is one sign of thrush, but it's always best to rule out the other causes of pain before seeking treatment (to avoid overuse of medications).

There's also a good Thrush Q and A on the same Breastfeeding Network site.

Have you ever had pain free feeds? Thrush in a baby this young is quit unusual unless you have large doses of anti-biotics and other possible cause of the pain need to be ruled out. I would ring one of the headlines for more breastfeeding support.

It sounds like it could be thrush - my dd and I had it when she was that age due to antibiotics after labour. Is the pain just in your nipples or the breast as well? My dd's tongue didn't look like google images either. I'd get it checked ASAP as deep tissue thrush is very painful!
