... remind me what's wrong with the latch when your baby makes those clicking noises as if the seal round their mouth/your nipple releases and lets in air?

Damned if I can remember and I can't stop it happening!

Can possibly be a sign of thrush? Do you have any other symptoms?

SoupDragon · 28/02/2006 13:44

No, there's no pain (bar a light sandpapered feeling :)) and nothing white in her mouth. It's just like she's not got a proper seal - I remember the boys doing it but I can't remember which bit of the latch is wrong (baby position, not enough nipple in mouth etc). It can't be anything major because I'm not sore.

DD is 12 weeks and has deone that clicking thing for about 8 weeks. Went to bf centre who though that she might not have had enough flesh in her mouth when feeding. They advised my to use my forefinger and thumb to shape the breast into a better kind of shape for her to latch on but after doing this she was still clicking. Have now been advised by a number of people that clicking is just normal for her and is causing no problems. Could be same for you??

hunkermunker · 28/02/2006 14:14

Sorry to scare you with the thrush thing - I was going to write more, but DS2 needed feeding! He's asleep in the sling on my front now though, so can MN again Grin

DS2 did this clicking thing too - he's stopped now (in the last week or so - can't really remember). I think sometimes he didn't have enough in his mouth and the seal wasn't good. I got over it by making sure his mouth was wide open (ha - easier said than done with him - he'll dive for me making snuffling noises and latch on to a half centimetre of nipple - ow!) and repositioning a lot.

I think sometimes they just have to grow a bit so their mouths are bigger - the feed he just had was the best yet - really well latched and relaxed. They're just a bit frantic and not sure they're going to get a feed in the first few weeks, IMO. Will be hauled over the coals by anyone who really know what they're talking about for this post, I'm sure Grin

Just talking from personal experience, but when dd2 did this it was usually a sign that she was too far over. In other words, if she was on the left side, I needed to shift her slightly to the right (and vice versa). I think changing her position slightly meant her neck was fully extended. Anyway, whatever the reason behind it, this slight change of position seemed to stop the clicking. Of course, someone with better knowledge than me might know of other reasons for a clicking sound. Anyway, hope this helps.

SoupDragon · 28/02/2006 16:44

none of my children have ever gaped like baby birds like they were meant to. toe curling in the early days!

I thought it was a too far/not far enough over or too high up etc problembut haven't found the right position! I think she's feeding OK and not sore so it must be just right for her likt TTM suggested.

maybe tiktok will spot this and tell use're all wrong!

ta!

When this was happening with me the mw said it was his tongue making the noise and that I needed to point my nipple further to the roof of his mouth rather than straight in.

jazzyp · 28/02/2006 17:08

I remember asking a bf counsellor about this. She said that it's only a problem for a newborn (2-3weeks old), older babies can sometimes be noisy eaters (like my dd!). If you're not really sore it should be okay. Has anyone checked your baby for tongue-tie?

SoupDragon · 28/02/2006 17:27

I thought about tongue tie in one of my more paranoid moments :o Looked fine though when I examined it myself.

Might try aiming for the roof of her mouth... mind you it's very much a case of "anywhere that's in and doesn't hurt is good" at the moment.

anyone would think this was my first rather than third bf baby!

Any other suggestions? It definitely seems to be a problem with the "seal" between her mouth and my breast. It's clearly not affecting her gettig a good feed but I'm a little concerned that she's gulping in air which is causing her windiness (and screaming). And it's damn messy as the milk leaks out round her mouth!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 05/03/2006 10:26

I think I read somewhere that if you have a strong letdown you sometimes get that clicking noise.
My DS is 23 weeks and still makes that noise (and I do have a strong letdown) But I thnk jazzyp might be right about some babies being noisy eaters.

hoxtonchick · 05/03/2006 10:47

dd clicked, on 1 side only, suddenly at about 13 weeks. i didn't notice the clicking until i went to see a bfc, just the pain. the problem was my enormous over-supply of milk, & the speed at which it gushed out. it meant that dd was a bit of a lazy feeder as she didn't have to make any effort and her latch kept slipping around. i had reposition her every time she clicked. bit of a PITA, but it did stop fairly quickly.

your dd's much younger than that though, isn't she? can you get someone who knows what they're doing to have a look in rl?

SoupDragon · 05/03/2006 10:50

Maybe it is the quantity of milk - it would certainly explain the leaking round her mouth. She's 4 weeks today.

I'm the lazy feeder in this partnership - I have got a bit complacent about latching her on I think.

koolkat · 05/03/2006 11:32

yes, I was thinking thrush too. DS got thrush when he was 4 - 5 months old. He used to scream and pull off the breast, but when he was latched on he made a clicking sound.

Do you have any other signs of thrush ?

koolkat · 05/03/2006 11:36

Sorry, just read thread again.

Sounds like bad latch. She should not be gulping so much air that it is causing wind.

A bit of a leak from the sides is normal esp. if you have loads of milk, which at 4 weeks old you probably have.

Please get latch checked by someone who is in the know, i.e. a bf adviser.

hotmama · 13/03/2006 15:03

This thread has got me thinking re the clicking etc. So going to the GP this pm as I think myself and dd2 have got thrush - as does the HV who I saw this morning.

What is the link between the clicking sound and thrush? Smile
