how do you feed in a sling when you're supposed to have baby at head kissing height?

so when carrying baby in sling, I am supposed to be able to kiss the top of her head without breaking my neck to do so.

my boobs are considerably lower than baby head kissing height, even with a marvellous bra on.

so how exactly do I feed her in it?! Confused

hey, congratulations on the new addition! Mine's 10 weeks old already. Shock

from what i can gather the best type for feeding is a ring sling. i only have a stretchy wrap. i have seen videos of people feeding on youtube, it does seem to involve a lot of rearranging though.

I'm finding the sling great with a toddler around, but I've just let DS2 out to get fed and usually end up taking the sling off and on too.

what kind of sling are you using?

BertieBotts · 30/06/2012 16:48

It depends on the kind of sling as to how exactly it works, but the basic premise is to loosen the material, move baby into a cradle position to feed, and retighten/adjust. Then when they've finished you loose, reposition, retighten again.

It takes a bit of getting used to - I never managed it with DS but since then I took a short course (as some friends and I were running a sling meet) and found I could do it easily when I had been shown how to do it proerly.

If you are using an ergo type sling /SSC you just loosen off the straps and shoogle baby down/sideway.

thank you! DD is 3 weeks on tuesday, it's going so fast!

I've got a bondolino sling, no idea what type that is - structured mei tei maybe? just used it for the first time today. I suspect feeding in it will evade us, but we're taking the kids to an olympic event and it would be so handy to feed in the sling!

ooh, xposted, thank you, will give it a go!

oh yeah forgot I'd heard a ssc type would work well too Blush

BertieBotts · 30/06/2012 16:58

SSCs are fairly tricky. You need to loosen it so that they can reach the boob but then it tends to be so loose that you have to hold them in, which is a pain.

just been watching videos of hands free nursing with a wrap sling.

i think I'd have to try it while DS2 wasn't too hungry as he'd go nuts by the time figured it out!

I was wondering about that too. The only video I've seen of someone feeding in a wrap sling, the woman had pretty large manoeuvrable boobs. My nipples stay in one place so no idea if I could do it.

muslimah28 · 01/07/2012 10:32

Definitely look up you tube tutorials on all sling how tos. They're brilliant, there are so many videos on there! But I too have concluded were not going to be able to feed in the (wrap) sling until 2wo dd has learnt how to latch herself on without me having to guide her- I don't think I could guide her properly with the latch in that position.

Something like a babasling?

BertieBotts · 01/07/2012 10:50

No no! Avoid the babasling at all costs, it's terrible. A ring sling is easy to feed in but you do need to do it the right way or you'll get all tangled up.

Good point muslimah - it is tricky to latch on until you get the hang of it.

jaggythistle · 01/07/2012 11:00

babasling is indeed awful. i had one for DS1 and i actually felt guilty selling it on ebay it was so bad!

muslimah28 · 01/07/2012 11:20

The babasling is not great as above posters have said. But when ds1 was about 7mo then it came into its own for a quick hip carry :)
