DS, 81/2mo is a biter. He has 4 teeth and may be cutting another. For a while he's been very distracted during day time feeds - which now often last under 5 mins but during the last 3 days he's started biting. He bites if you pick him up - I have bruises all over the tops of my arms where I've been nipped but he also bites during feeds, usually after about 40seconds. Each time he's done I've yelped "no!" and put him on the floor. I then generally pick him up and carry on. For another 40 seconds... and so on.

He has his best feeds at night when he's sleepy - which means he's still feeding during the night -dream feed at 11ish and then 3 and half 5ish.

He feeds for about an hour a day in total and has 3 meals a day, including cereal with ebm. I express every morning - on good day its 100ml - enough for breakfast and over a couple of days for custard too. On a bad day it can take an hour to get 40ml.

He's dairy and soy intolerant so over the counter formula isn't an option, but I'd rather keep breastfeeding if I possibly can. It also means he needs the milk rather than substitute cheese/yoghurt etc.

Has anyone got any advice as to how I can ensure he gets enough milk whilst stopping him biting?

At 8 1/2 month he could well be using you as a drink in the day and not a feed, try giving him a drink instead. Or when he bites don't let him re latch. Both of these sound quite tuff but remember he has 3 feeds at night that will still be giving him what he needs. Good luck and get some nipple soothing gel

the milk he is having at the moment sounds just fine to me tbh!

i wonder if he is teething? my youngest was a bit of a biter whenever he had teeth coming through.
you could try unlatching him before he bites... it'll be a bit hit and miss and annoying taking him on and off but he might learn not to do it.
or, if he bites then take him off and don't offer again until he asks.
you could also try giving a bit of calpol before a feed in case it's hurting him?

sorry, just re-read and seen that yes, he is teething!

i know the night feeds are a pain, but he'll be getting plenty of milk from them, so i really wouldn't worry unduly.

I used oat milk (still do) for ds2 and ds3, you can use it in cooking and on cereal when weaning if you don't have enough EBM. it has the same amount of calcium in as cow's milk does plus it's enriched with other vitamins.
only thing missing is the fat, but like I say, i suspect he's getting enough breastmilk right now anyway

Thank you. You've made me feel a lot better - and much less alone and paranoid!

And since I posted this I've been bitten on the arm only twice and not bitten at all during a feed.

Do you suppose he's been reading mn for advice?
