What do I need to know about c-section and BF?

Due date is today. Midwife suddenly decided yesterday that baby might be breech so going in for a scan today. I had lots of problems establishing breastfeeding last time, although succeeded in the end, and was hoping for an easier start this time!

Can a c-section make it more difficult to get started? I am producing plenty of colostrum (literally dripping with the stuff!). Thanks for any advice.

I used one of those curved cushion things to place d on while feeding so she wasn't lying on the scar.

Good luck!

It can but IMe was easier - Thr main issue being might Need help If sore to move baby into position. I did go for skin to skin contact as soon as possible - didn't do that with dd1 for various reasons (she was vaginal delivery) and feeding her much worse.

Hi. I had a crash section with my dd 12 weeks ago and never had any problems breastfeeding. My hospital who were fantastic were so pro skin to skin that they had my upper half all open and ready to place the baby on once they got her out. They yanked her out, took her away for about a min to sort out her breathing and air ways then placed her straight on my chest. They didn't weigh her or anything until i'd had a good 10 mins of skin to skin. They then kept her on my chest whilst I was wheeled to recovery. About 20 mins later a breast feeding nurse came over and helped us feed for the first time which we did lying down as couldn't sit up or anything and we've never looked back! Once I could sit up on the 2nd day the breast feeding nurse came again just to help us with positioning whilst sitting up. I've never ever felt my scar whilst feeding. My tips would be as much skin to skin as possible post section including the first few days. Dont let well wishing relatives hogg the baby. Keep it near to you. Get some help the first time you feed. I also co slept in hospital from day one as again they were encouraging it but know this may be different in other hospitals oh and take your pain killers like clock work. Dont let the pain creep up on you. For what its worth my section was a lovely experience, no issues whatsoever and I recovered really quickly and easily! Best of luck

that does sound great feekerry!

i had an unplanned cs for DS1 and we got on fine (once his tongue tie was fixed.) i didn't get skin to skin or to start feeding till i was in recovery though.

it's just difficult sitting up and down at first, so more a moving problem than a feeding one! i used a pillow to put him on too.

good luck!

I had an EMCS but breastfeeding seemed to click for us. Make good use of the electric bed in hospital to get yourself comfortable. Check out positions for laid back breastfeeding - it's the most comfortable way to feed with it without a section.
