breast feeding and hayfever

My hayfever has got really bad over the last few days. The pharmacist gave me a nasal spray called prevalin and although it is helping it isn't getting rid of the symptoms. I'm finding that I'm hiding indoors and avoiding doing anything outside but I want to enjoy the nice weather we're having. I've been told I can't have antihistamines because I'm breast feeding. Has anyone been given anything else that works well? TIA

I don't have any personal experience, but this factsheet from the Breastfeeding Network on antihistamines suggests that some might be ok.

My doc prescribed anti h for my hayfever last week no problem. Just said avoid the drowsy ones.

nannyl · 26/06/2012 17:47

my dr prescribed me loaratadine last week (calrityn)

as well as nasal spray and eye drops

it is true that while piriton is ok while pg, its not advisable for more than a 1 or 2 off dose while BFing, but plenty of other antihistamines are fine

Try Haymax. It really does what it says on the tin.... A gel you put beneath your nose and it traps the pollen.

My midwife said to use sprays only which didn't help very much. The GP then prescribed loratidine. I'm taking it every day and no problems so far. Also it's quite cheap compared to the branded pills.

why is piriton not ok, i always took it when bfeeding and was told it was fine, and did so for 9yrs of bfeeding, couldnt have survived without it!

5madthings · 27/06/2012 21:22

piriton is chlorphenimine isnt it? also have taken loratidine when bfeeding.

olimpia · 27/06/2012 21:39

All antihistamines are fine. I spoke to a very nice lady on the bf network helpline recently because I thought DS was sleeping more than usual after I took a cetirizine but she reassured me that it was just a coincidence and all antihistamines are fine.

nannyl · 27/06/2012 22:23

according to the medicines while BFing leaflet i read, it said (words to the effect of) piriton can cause babies to get drowsy, and not feed and fail to thrive, and was therefor not recommended for more than a 1 or 2 off dose.

it recommended the other antihistamines instead

5madthings · 27/06/2012 22:29

well the bfeeding counsellor i spoke to through bfeeding network said they were fine and i have to say my babies were def not failure to thrive, the opposite piling on the weight.

one to check with someone in the know, bet tiktok would have a link!

feekerry · 28/06/2012 08:17

my doc also said piriton and all others were totally fine

shelley72 · 28/06/2012 08:28

i have literally just taken some infant piriton (that my DD also takes when she has one of her reactions to someting) as i wasnt sure what i could take and my hayfever is really bad today. i had managed to avoid taking anything up til now, but i figured if she has taken it in the past and was ok with it, the teeny bit that would get into my BM wouldnt do any harm. she has not had any herself recently / today btw, and she is 2.

I only have mild hayfever and manage by putting Vaseline around my nostrils (although this needs cleaning off/reapplying regularly if you don't want a yellow nose!) and wearing wraparound sunglasses. Not perfect but if you can't find anything strong you are happy to take it may help.
