Changing to a different formula..................

Our Ds3 is 11 weeks old and has been bottlefed SMA gold since birth. He is painfully slow at drinking his milk(sometimes 2 or more hours) even though he has been on vari-flow teats for weeks. I've tried fast flow and he was just the same and also didn't like the shape of the different teat.

So I'm wondering could it be the formula? Should I change to a different one? Has anyone done this at this stage and it gone well or gone totally pearshaped?

Thanks ladies........

emmatmg my sis changed formulas for her little boy i think but it was later than that! I'd persrevere till you find the right teat as it took me a while to find the right one for dd I have no advice on changing formula though! Could you ring your H.V and just get advice? Good luck+

Different scenario but when I was breastfeeding nearly fully if I ever didnt have enough EBM I used to give sma gold - now Ive changed to almost all bottles I have put him on aptamil an dhe has done ok!!

HTH a little

We changed ds's formula at about that stage, or maybe a little earlier, because he was a bit colicky so we opted for one that was supposed to be easier to digest. We had no problems whatsoever with the change.

Are you using MAWS or Avent variflo teats? We much preferred the MAWS ones.

Emmatmg, we tried various formulas - started on SMA like you, then Cow & Gate (green), then C&G Omneo Comfort (fantastic), then Aptamil. I'd recommend Omneo for an unsettled baby - like DD. Then after about 3 months on that, we`changed to Aptamil (easier to carry round and mix up when out and about).
Good luck, Dinny

Sorry, Gingernut! I found Avent best (not variflows tho - kept to slow-release 2-3 ers.)

gingernut · 09/12/2003 23:26

It's OK Dinny, it was our babies after all who selected the best teats for them .

We used Omneo too, found it v. good, and then later when ds was less colicky swtiched to Aptamil. But for a very slow feeder Omneo probably wouldn't be the best as it's very thick. Ds would always down a bottle of SMA or Aptamil much quicker than Omneo.

My dd is/was a glugger...in fact, shocked the other day when gave her a beaker of (weak!) Ribena with her tea and she downed it MUCH faster than I could have. But - that meant she was colicky when younger. Omneo was a fab find though.

gingernut · 10/12/2003 00:08

My ds is a glugger too (like his Mum ) but emmatmg's ds is a slow feeder.

Actually, I do think it's a bit odd that he's feeding so slowly emma. Have you spoken to your HV or anyone else about this? I don't know what to suggest TBH, but I don't think there's any harm in trying a different formula and/or various different teats. Maybe a slower teat would be better in fact because he might be struggling with the flow rate and consequently sucking less hard.

emmatmg · 10/12/2003 06:41

I spoke to a HV at the drop in clinic(not my own HV) the other week as he'd only put on 3or4 oz in a week and she suggested the fast flow teats.

The problem I have with different teat is the vari-flow (Tommee Tippee Nuby) ones that I use have a sort off well at the top, it's a bit difficult to explain really, so because all the others have a proper rounded end he can feel the difference. We used to use the avent ones before these which would probably be better for him now but I just will not take it, I can't even get it in his mouth as he just clamps it shut but then I changed it back to a Nuby one and he'd open up and drink it.

Hi Emma,
My ds2 (15 weeks) has literally only just (yesterday) gone from the newborn slow-flow teats (level 1 on the Dr Brown's bottles) onto the medium flow (level 2).

I've tried him several times before now with a faster flowing teat,as he was taking a good half hour to feed, sometimes longer, which isn't much fun if they wake in the night! And it was taking up a lot of my time in the day when ds1 wanted some attention.

Before yesterday, whenever I tried to give hima faster flowing one, he would splutter after a few noisy, air-filled gulps, and seemed really uncomfortable with the amount of wind he was taking in, so I gave up and resigned myself to slow feeds for a bit longer. But now he's really ready for the faster flow teats, and it takes half the time it used to!
The Dr Browns teats have a sort of bulbous shape at the end, maybe similar to the 'well' you describe?
