Breastfeeding and dummy

ello - my DS is 5 weeks and very grizzly, he's my 2nd. DD is 2 and was BF for 6 months and sucks her thumb:(

My DS is very grizzly, we're trying a bit of Infacol, and lots of walking around back patting. I'm wondering whether a dummy would help, I've heard they can help settle tummy's - I'm not anti dummies, I'm pro anyting which works!

Any experience etc?

Many thanks

Bumping as my 3 week old DD won't settle unless she's attached to my boob. Thinking of getting a dummy but is she too young?

Also I heard you can get a type of dummy for breastfed babies, anyone know if this is true?

AdiVic · 23/06/2012 18:27

i've heard of the bf dummy to, but not sure what it is. It gets boring having a baby constantly on the boob - all dignity and giving a monkeys goes out the window - my boobs seem to be permanently out:(

p.s. I meant to say Hello in first post, not 'ello!

I have used a dummy for all 3 of mine and all 3 were ebf. Dc3 is currently 11 weeks and I've used one since day 1 with no problems.

IME babies are programmed to suck and sometimes they just need to suck for comfort without needing to feed 24 hrs a day!

I've never heard of a special dummy for ebf babies but could be worth looking into I've always just bought the cheapest :)

Some breastfed babies get on OK with a dummy, some do not. You might want to read up about it first before you decide. Here is some information that might help you :)

If you're not happy with the amount of time that your DS wants to spend sucking then maybe you could talk to a BF counsellor about it, there might be other options for you.

How is he apart from the grizzling, is he gaining weight well?

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 23/06/2012 19:02

DS (6mths, ebf) quite likes them when he's grizzly and struggling to get to sleep, but he much prefers the boob and 99.9% of the time that's all he's after.

My DD who was also bf wouldn't entertain the idea of a dummy at all.

I ebf and gave my dd a dummy from about 4 weeks. She is fine with the breast and the dummy - no problems at all. I use an avent one, but I've heard that tommee tippee closer to nature dummies are shaped like nipples so supposed to be less confusing for breastfed babies.
DD just wanted to comfort suck and used to get angry and sicky when she just wanted to suckle and milk was coming out so the dummy worked well for us.

hello - EauRauge, he is gaining weight well, 7lb at birth, now 12lb. He just seems to like sucking!! I gave him a dummy about an hour ago, and all good so far. My DD was ebf and wouldn't take a dummy at all.

I know some people are quite fussy about dummies, but anything for a quiet life in my book, for him and me. He seems very settled, long may it last

Thank you for your replies:) x

Hiya, both DC1 and 2 were sucky babies and went from being almost permanently on comfort boob sucks to thumbs which 4 and 6 years later I can't get them to stop (despite telling offs from the dentist too).

So I have given DC3 a dummy anticipating the same suckiness but figuring at least you can take a dummy away unlike a thumb. He's nearly 5 weeks old, ebf and for the past 2 weeks has taken to it quite enthusiastically and makes it quite clear if he wants feeding instead. Sometimes he settles without it, others it definitely helps.

I have given him the tommee tippee ones which are supposed to be used from birth but I know speaking to others, babies seem to have preferences!
