Is Lansinoh a bit like lipsalve i.e. you use it so you need it?!

DS2 is now 12 weeks old. I had big problems at first gettting him to latch on and was very sore. Things have got progressively better but I am still a bit sore, mainly when first latching on. I've had my latch checked by a million people who all say it looks fine and I had the same thing with DS1 until 3/4 months so am resigned to having nipples that need a bit of 'breaking in' Grin However, I'm now down to the very last bit of Lansinoh in the tube and got to wondering if, as the title says, I need it because I use it. I know this sounds daft but I always find that if I start using lipsalve, I have to use it all the time. Before I go out and shell another tenner on some Lansinoh, I just thought I'd canvass opinion on my bonkers theory.

I can't answer your question, all I know is that it's helped my poor boobs. :o Also, someone on another thread spotted it for £8 on Amazon at the mo
www.amazon.co.uk/Lansinoh-Cream-Sore-Nipples-Cracked/dp/B0006JLIFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340181854&sr=8-1

:)

Thanks! Yes, there's no way my poor nips would have made it this far without it! I think I probably just need to stop being so stingy and buy some - sod's law will then dictate that all soreness will disappear within a week which can only be a good thing Grin

Well actually I'm kind of with you on this one artifarti.

So often we see mothers proclaiming Lansinoh as some sort of miracle cure for sore nipples - even advocating putting it on before a feed as well as after.

I've no doubt that it can be soothing for sore nipples and can certainly help with cracks (using the moist wound healing method).

However - if too much is used the baby can slip off the nipple, making it harder to latch and it can be a breeding ground for thrush. Also, if the basics of positioning and attachment aren't sorted out, then it will not actually do anything.

I'm sure lots of mnetters are not going to agree with me on this one but at around ten quid a go, I think we are often duped in to thinking it is going to sort out every nipple problem when a dabbing of Vaseline may have the same effect.

One other thing to mention is that you can apparently get it on prescription, so that may be worth a thought.

OK, rant over. Smile

I spent the first 2 months covering myself in the stuff nd firmly belive i wouldn't have made it through without it. However, the other day i suddenly realised that at 12 weeks i hadn't put any on for over a week. I just don't need it anymore. So, no I don't think it is like lipsalve or I would be using it forever, just use it till you stop needing to I say :)

I've just finished my BF peer support course and they have said we can suggest Vaseline instead of Lanisoh for moist wound healing.

I agree that unless you have cracked nipples that you want/need to heal, there's no point in using it because it won't do anything.

The stuff was a magic elixir for me with dd1 (pfb). I was weepingly sore til it went on then very comfortable. Didn't need it with other two dc-think all feeling was lost by then Wink

Molehillmountain · 20/06/2012 14:06

Oh, and I was like the other poster-one say I realised I hadn't used it for ages and didn't have to go back to it.

Tanyaaah · 20/06/2012 14:33

I used it when sore with 2 babies, stopped when I wasn't and never needed it since, still a pretty much full tube!
My midwife gave me a prescription for it too, maybe you could get one so you don't have to pay for it?

artifarti · 20/06/2012 14:33

Thanks all. Hmmm, I'm not using it for many feeds now and so I might try and do without and see what happens...

I used it with ds1 and will make sure I've got some in stock ready for this one when it arrives, the end of the tube helped heal my cracked hands after breastfeeding so wasn't wasted at all! Also proved excellent for helping noses/lips in the throes of stinking colds. No right or wrong, use it when it helps, don't when you don't need it. I don't get on very well with Vaseline personally so will stick with it but that's an interesting thought up thread and I certainly didn't know it could be had on prescription.

DrCoconut · 22/06/2012 01:06

My GP would not prescribe lansinoh. The MW gave out free samples repeatedly but it meant regularly going to collect. I founs that kamillosan was better anyway and I could get that prescribed. It's different for everyone though.

StiffyByng · 22/06/2012 08:55

I found it brilliant on bad nappy rash once I was done using it on myself.
