GP Recommended NIPPLE SHIELDS - am b/feeding 10 month old! how will this EVER work?

have pain in one nipple. Very localised for the last week. Never had anything like it before - only hurts when DS feeds. Have had Mastitis and thrush before and its not that.

GP looked and said it could be nipple trauma/damage. (Cant see why it would be 8 months after thrush, but anyway). All he could recommend was using nipple shields. OH, and Contact your HV to give you some more advice.

DS is NOT going to take to it, i KNOW he wont. What the hell am i going to do? I dont want to give up b/feeding.

I used nipple shields for 8 months with dd and 4 months with ds. try it, they aren't that bad - esecially as it might onlu be for a few days till you heal.

But to start using them 10 months in? Surely DS will know - he wont have a dummy and bottle and im assuming its a similar sensation forhim?

sounds utterly unhelpful - i was always told to use nipple shields when they meant 'oh please please go away i don't know anything about breastfeeding but won't admit it'

there's no crack, biting damage or bruise? dodgy latch?

Ellbell · 24/02/2006 23:24

VVV - no real advice, sorry, and can see your worries. However, he might just about accept the nipple shield if he gets the idea that there is still milk coming out through it. Worth a try? I did use nipple shields with dd1 for a while and did manage to get her off NGT feeding and home from hospital like that, but it wasn't very satisfactory, I must say. Sorry not much help.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/02/2006 23:48

No visible damage/bruising etc. Which is why he thinks its just trauma from thrush earlier damage etc.

Ellbell - my ds is still struggling with weaning & solids at 10 mths and refuses bottles, dummies etc. I just cant see him accepting it, and i dont want to waste my money. Im kinda stuck arent i.

hey there
I would say stop feeding from that side for the time being and see if things improve.
it is perfectly possible to feed from one side - I know three poeple who did (including me) for several months.

Kelly1978 · 25/02/2006 00:09

I fed from one side for a few months. I had mastitus and dried up on one side. Might be better than nothing.

Could you alter the position DS latchs on? by this i mean the way he lies so that the pressure is in a different area? this might help ease the discomfort and allow it to recover.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/02/2006 17:10

I'd go see a BFC, and get your latch etc checked. Is there a lump there? (You'd expect a lump for previous trauma.)

Oh yes, and as matnanplus recommends, a different position. Is the sore spot near where your DS's lower (or upper?) jaw is? Or where any new teeth are?
