recommend a pro BF paediatrician easy reach of Clapham?

Due to poor weight gain in my 3 week old the MW had told me to get him checked by a paediatrician to rule stuff out. I can do this at St Georges by waiting in A&E (yes really - hardly the best place to BF and pump and supplement my LO so sounds v stressful) or I can use the private Health insurance I have through work....

if anyone can recommend a good paediatrician who will also help me to keep BF I would be grateful (I am not anti formula as I do use it to top up when I dont have enough EBM for the top ups I am doing but I dont want to undermine BF in the longer term)

Thanks

Can't your mw just make a referral to a paed without having to sit in A and E? Or could your GP not refer you? Sounds a cackhanded way of doing things .

Do you mind me asking what sort of poor weight gain you are experiencing?

How odd that she did not refer you. There is usually a paed at weekly baby clinic. Don't go to A&E. Go to your GP who will refer you to paeds. Also ask for advice on BFing topic to check latch etc etc.

Why are you topping up?

Thanks guys. we saw a paed privately. He was lovely. Dr Barakat. said my LO was fine and just needed feeding up - as i thought! My instincts were correct.

dearth - my milk has never properly come in - for whatever reason. many possible reasons and most likely a combo of all of them - tis not a straight forward case! incl: LO not transferring properly & thus inadequate supply & demand, mother never made enough due to poor thyroid management or pre eclampsia, thrush in nipple of mother & evident on LO bottom, LO not opening mouth wide enough & possible PTT.

anyway - i think we are on the right path now. hoping so anyway!!!

MW wanted me to be seen in A&E straight away. arse covering i suspect. good idea to check LO ok but some scaremongering too. enough to put a mother off BF that is for sure. As my DH said - Breast is best until there is a problem. Unfortunately the NHS is ill equiped to help these mothers & babies so formula is the sticking plaster applied to the problem. such a shame.
