Follow on milk? Really?

Ok when I started having Dcs this hadn't been invented. It was simply cows milk at a year. I always considered it unnecessary expense and a marketing ploy! Was I wrong? I've bf all
My 5 with a top up formula feed. Then at a year just changed to cows milk full fat.

This Ds the rules seem to have changed so much. He goes 2 nursery 3 days s week and they will pay for formula if I want it!

He's 9 months so no panic, just thinking ahead!

I understand is just invented to allow companies to get round advertising regs. If you need/want formula the Stage 1 stuff is fine.

I'm quite lucky really all have had great skin, no allergies etc, so am tempted to do the same again! Unless there's a reason it's a bad idea?

It does have high iron content which is the most common deficiency but as long as dc is having a good healthy diet with iron rich sources (red meat etc) then I see absolutely no need.

In fact dd1 was formulae fed and switching to this gave her constipation terribly. HV said its quite commen and to stick to stage one if she wouldn't take cows milk.

Follow on milk has been linked to impaired development.

I'd just stick to what you are doing now and once he is one he can have full fat cows milk and or bfs as you choose.

Really impaired development??? I do suffer from anaemia and so have my other Dcs at different times. However amongst them were some very faddy eaters. Littlest ds eats really well so don't think a full balanced diet will be hard for him Smile

Its hard though with follow on milk being half the price of first milk....what reason should I stay on first milk for, when I could cut my milk bill in half by switching?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/06/2012 15:05

Gnocci can see what you mean but you may want to read the information in my link above before switching Smile.

Will do. Am BLWing so reckon ill have to stay on first milk until dd starts doing more than sucking broccoli Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/06/2012 20:42

Good luck with that then, DD was BLW and has not eaten a thing for tea Hmm
