She now has 9 teeth :(

She hasn't bitten me (nipped me a couple of times when unlatching but more because I wasnt paying attention) but shes cut her 9th yesterday and her latch is different on my right side.

It hurts like hell when she latches, sucking hard and I think one tooth is rubbing somewhere?!

Have put a bit of lansinhol (sp?) on but still felt painful when putting her to bed. The other side is ok though.

It's like feeding when she was newborn and had tongue tie...ouch :(

Any ideas / tips to help?

just hugs and bumping it up...
my 2 younger sons did that and I could not cope, so sadly can't help you on how you can get through it.... but I hope one of the brilliant girls will be around in a moment to give you some good advice.

Thanks fairy Smile

Bumping again...

She is teething badly, up every hour last night screaming. And what calms her? Boobie Sad Grin

I've got a similar issue but mine are cracked. I don't have any magic advice but mine got really bad a couple of days ago so I rested that side, expressed a couple of times and just fed more from the good side. Have you tried to feed lying down, does it still rub?

DD's latch changed when she got teeth

It took a few days for us to adjust

Sometimes changing position even by a tiny bit was enough to help

MumIAm · 17/06/2012 08:47

While it may not solve the problem completely I've found turning my DS round so he is in the opposite position helps. Baby's tongues generally cover their bottom teeth when they feed so it's the top teeth that you want to watch for. You can also buy nipple shields from Boots. I spoke to my pharmacist about the same issue and she gave me a medicated lip balm that was ok for DS to consume (like lasinoh) but actually helped any cuts/sore skin to heal, which was great.

Have you tried going back to basics and pretending she is a newborn who needs to get a spot on latch? Or tried exaggerated latch/deep latch technique to get her on as deeply as possible?

Some babies do take a few days to adjust to the new 'mouth-feel' that teeth bring and that can throw their latch off until they get used to it all again. I have heard (ancedotally) that using teething gels has inhibited the relearning as the mouth is numb, so if you have been using teething gels just prior to bfing it might be worth trying after/between feeds to see if it helps.

Fab advice ladies thank you.

Lying down feeding position is my favourite but it's still the same.

Definitely the top teeth are causing the problems, she's had bottom ones since 6 months. She cut all 4 top ones in the last 2 weeks so she's getting used to them in her mouth I suppose.

Truthsweet - yes, I'd heard teething gels can numb the mouth too so have held off using them. Have tried going back to basics and it eases a bit. I wonder if the are cracked a little from poor latch over a couple of feed, so could be cause of pain now. Will try exaggerated latch technique, that saved me 10 months ago!

Thanks again.

I had the exact same problem when my DD cut her first tooth, it was agony, at one point I wondered if my nipples would just fall off! I came on here to get some advice and someone had suggested buying a dressing called Jelonet. Which you apply under breast pad in between feeds.
My local Boots store ordered me some, and I am telling you, it was amazing stuff. Took 2 days and they then felt completely better.
Hope it gets better
