Please tell us what you think about this Baby Milk Action campaign on formula pricing and marketing

Hello,

We've been contacted by the team at Baby Milk Action with a request that Mumsnet offer public support for its new campaign to persuade formula manufacturers to stop promoting their products and to make permanent (rather than promotional) cuts to the price of formula milk. Baby Milk Action's view is that international marketing rules ban companies from promoting formula, but they do not abide by these rules in the UK. The campaign promotes the right of mothers and the wider public to independent information on pregnancy and baby care through the health care system and mother support groups.

You can read Baby Milk Action's press release about the campaign here.

We'd be interested to hear your views about whether this is something Mumsnet should sign up to. As most of you will already know, Mumsnet supports the Nestle boycott and works with Baby Milk Action to put pressure on formula manufacturers to act responsibly; you can see more about our policy on this here.

Thanks,

MNHQ

I agree, frmua is so expensive for what it is, and you don't even get a full can. Hence I am expressing as much as I can so I don't have to buy much formula

mummysmellsofsick · 16/06/2012 15:34

Please support the campaign. I feel very strongly about this as I think would any mother armed with all the facts

JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/06/2012 16:30

What Eau said Smile.

I support this petition too. It will be a big uphill battle against the multinational corporations who want to keep the status quo because they profit from it, instead of doing what is right.

AbigailAdams · 18/06/2012 20:34

Agree with all the above really. Good campaign. Please support.

hermioneweasley · 18/06/2012 20:36

Absolutely agree re perm reduction in price

twofurryones · 21/06/2012 15:02

Yes please support this campaign. I have nothing against the formula feeding of babies but I have massive issues with information on infant nutrition being delivered by those motivated primarily by commercial gain.

greenbananas · 24/06/2012 19:13

Yes, mumsnet should support this campaign.

whatinthewhatnow · 24/06/2012 19:46

yes please support. bma is a great organisation that seems to have a genuine mission to protect women and babies. It would be fab if mn got behind it.

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2012 20:16

Yes please

missdeelite · 25/06/2012 14:35

Agree with all above comments I'm appalled by the way these companies exploit women and their babies here and abroad.

SarryB · 25/06/2012 14:42

Please support this campaign.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 25/06/2012 14:49

This looks a really well thought out campaign. I'd be really happy to see MN support this.

StarlightWithAsteroid · 25/06/2012 14:54

Yes please.

MarzipanAnimal · 29/06/2012 13:33

Yes please support it

changeforthebetter · 29/06/2012 13:37

Yes please support - parents who use FF for whatever reason (including me at one point) need good information which is free of commercial taint. They do not need to be told that X brand is good because "it is the closest to breastmilk" Hmm

Nor should they have to pay a fortune for advertising campaigns.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/06/2012 13:39

Please support.

Any updates MNHQ?

violetwellies · 30/06/2012 21:12

I agree with everyone else, please support this.

CatherineMumsnet · 30/06/2012 21:57

RowanMumsnet · 01/07/2012 16:32

Hi there,

Yes, we will be supporting this one; we're talking to Baby Milk Action about the best way to do that and we'll come back to you with some news soon.

Yes, do. Bottle feeding is one of the biggest killers of babies on the planet. Some of the ads on television are just unacceptable.

There are so many areas in which what is good for people is what others want to advertise. Another example is advertising foods which are not good for people. No one really spends money in advertising basic foods which people need like veg.

EauRouge · 01/07/2012 19:38

Thank you, MNHQ :)
