aptimil - change of formula??

Hi again (second post in few minutes)

I've used aptimil with all DS's but now using with DD and found it doesn't dissolve like it should, never had a problem before and I'm making it with hot boiled water and shaking loads. After a feed I can see powder on the inside of the bottle...

Anyone else with this issue?? SMA Gold seems fine made the same way.

Thanks!

I am having the same issue. And funnily enough I was previously making formula incorrectly based on stupid midwife advice, but it was dissolving better! I seem to remember my latest tin had a leaflet inside saying it was a new recipe. I wonder if that has caused it? Will watch this thread in case anyone can provide any insight.

Me too. I thought the same as Lobster about the new recipe but it's the only milk my twins will tolerate so lumpy milk it is!

Interesting!

Glad it's not only me, will watch thread......

Thanks

Aptamil have just changed their formula, according to the box. The water needs to be cooled boiled water, ie warm. I haven't noticed any difference actually.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 09/06/2012 23:39

oh that's weird.. doesn't the water need to be 70C ? Confused

Xmasbaby11 · 09/06/2012 23:41

I don't know about the temperature... the box doesn't mention it, but says wait 30mins.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 09/06/2012 23:45

If you wait 30 mins a full kettle should be about 70C. If it mixes well at that then that's fine.

Xmasbaby11 · 09/06/2012 23:50

To be honest I pour the water into the bottle immediately and let it cool there, otherwise someone (DH) will come and reboil the kettle or use it for tea! It seems strange to leave the water in the kettle. Surely the rate of cooling depends on the size of the kettle and how full it is? I wouldn't boil a full kettle for one bottle's worth, as the remainder would have to be discarded.

I keep a flash of cooled boiled water and mix it with the warmer one to make the bottle the right temperature to make the formula and immediately feed it to DD. I am not sure if this is strictly correct but DD has never been ill and this is what all my friends do.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 09/06/2012 23:57

Well, if you're putting it in the bottle then leaving it, don't leave it for half an hour - it'll be too cool to safely mix the formula.

Easiest thing is to put a kettle full into a thermos flask, then you'll have almost boiled water ready for when you need it to make up fresh bottles.

WIth your method just make sure you mix the formula with the hotter water first, THEN add the cooler water to make it the right temp. trouble with doing it that way is that it's hard to get the right proportion of powder to water.

Thelobsterswife · 11/06/2012 17:52

My understanding is that the half an hour assumes you ae boiling one litre of water. If you are boiling less, then you would probably need to make the bottle quicker. It is not to do with the dissolving the powder, it is to do with killing the bacteria. Xmas baby - I think it is not that the baby might be a bit poorly on an ongoing basis, they will either be very ill or not if you don't ensure the water is the correc temperature. I believe the risk is about 1 in 1000.
