On demand Bf and baby meds

Can anyone who had to administer meds with every feed tell me how you did it? Were really struggling with silent reflux and trying to use Gaviscon with a syringe. But you have to give it with every feed. How do you do that when she feeds on demand; there's more Gaviscon going in than milk... I think I have finally found a plus for bottle feeding... :(

My little one is bf on demand and takes gaviscon. She used to feed frequently and I couldn't give the meds each time as sometimes it was hard to know where one feed finished and another started. What I did was to space the doses out throughout the day so it was given regularly but I wasn't trying to cram it in all the time. I aimed for 3-4 hourly so she was getting 6-8 doses a day.

Thanks Dicdic, did you use a syringe?

Yes, I mix it in a sterile bottle then use a syringe to give it. Usually DD was so hungry she'd suck it up with no problems. That said, the last week or so she has taken to dribbling it straight out again so I can only hope that some of it is getting swallowed!

We have to give our DS meds & do it via a special dummy you can get in boots m.boots.com/mt/www.boots.com/en/4Little1-Eezimed-Medicine-Dummy_1219905 Still a bit if a gaff but best thing we've found so far Smile

Thanks Sucked, I'll definitely try one of those when she reaches 3 months. She will take a dummy so worth a go. I guess you just pop it in after each feed...

Sorry to barge in on your thread, latristesse I noticed your bubby has reflux, mine too so did my second baby. This time my doc suggested reflux is sometimes worsened or caused by temporary milk intolerance in babies and suggested we try dd3 on soya milk. I am bfing dd3 is 8 weeks now. Having seen bits in the news about soya milk I decided I didnt know enough about it to try so someone suggested not eating dairy for a month to see what happens. I have and dd3's reflux has all but gone unless I lie her down to sleep on her back( she just can't at the moment) and she is so happy, it's amazing to see the difference. I just thought I would mention it In case you really didn't want to stop bfing. Obviously not all babies with reflux have intolerances but it does seem common in those with silent reflux. Dd2 had projectile vomiting so bit different this time. The dairy free thing has been far easier than I thought once you get a bit creative and there are loads of things in the shops now, I even found dairy free jammy dodgers in waitrose! Still searching for the perfect milk alternative for a decent cup of tea though, found one for coffee! I was a complete cheese and butter fiend too. I am a month in and I just thought its not forever. If not for you I hope the gaviscon works if not do ask your doctor to try other meds as there are much better ones which will give your baby more relief Smile

Just reading the box whilst preparing a dose for DD and it says to give no more than 6 times a day. Not an issue for us as we're down to 2 doses now but this should make it easier for you to space out doses.

LaTristesse · 07/06/2012 16:06

Thanks Dicdic, when you say 3-4 hourly and 6-8 doses, do you mean 6-8 sachets, or the double dose for heavier babies ie 12-16 sachets?

Thanks shezzle, I will look into this as I won't be stopping bf however much of a faff the meds are! I don't each much dairy, only cheese and yoghurt really, already use rice milk and soya... But will cut out those bits to see if it helps, thanks for the suggestion.

I mean one sachet (6-8). My DD was only 5lb 6oz at birth and still isn't 10lb at 16 weeks so I've stuck to one sachet.

No probs, it is all such trial and error to get to the bottom of these things. My dd3 is the same with soya too, so I left that out, apparently something like 75% of babies who are intolerant to cows milk protein are the same with soya. Luckily for most it doesn't last forever. I can't believe how different my dd3 is each day she is getting better&better! It can take up to a month to see results. Good luck and I hope your lo is better soon x
