DS has teeth - can I stop BF now?

He is 6 months old. He is combi fed, but he has 2 teeth and lately has been nipping me when feeding

It hurts! How do people who do extended bf get around this?

And also - how do I get him off the boob if the nipping won't stop? He loves it and I will feel mean :(

Well in answer to your question it's up to you when you stop, teeth or no teeth.

Most babies find being swiftly removed from the breast something they don't like, and learn that teeth = removal!

The first and second times my children bit me while feeding they were swiftly removed. Didn't happen again. And you can stop whenever you want!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 03/06/2012 10:16

Haha 'swiftly removed' jinx!

HRHcatgirl1976 · 03/06/2012 10:20

Thanks :)

I know I can stop but it doesn't seem like the best reason

He is swiftly removed when he does it (often with accompanying yelp!) so I will see if he catches on :)

When a baby is actually feeding, the tongue covers the bottom teeth, so it's not possible for them to bite when they are feeding.

The biting is most likely to happen towards the end of a feed so you can watch carefully and take him off before he actually bites you.

No, simply remove DS plonk on floor, no eye contact, resume feeding a minute or two later.

The trick is to remove nice warm cuddle and food for long enough DS notices, but doesn't get upset.

DD2 got the message very quickly.

DS screamed the minute his plaything was removed. The other trick is, of they clamp down hard, to pull them in tight so they open their mouth to breathe. I'd only recommend that if swift removal doesn't work though.

Well to echo everyone else you don't need to justify your decision to stop.

I stopped feeding youngest at 15mths and her teeth- and repeated biting- played a significant part in the decision.

A lot of the time he is just going for comfort and not really feeding, so I think that's why he is biting as he is playing about a bit
