DD is allergic to milk (not lactose) and my breasts hurt from constant breastfeeding...

she is 8 months old and has a HUGE appetite. I want to start weaning her off breast milk entirely over a 3 month period from the end of the month when she hits 9 months, but as she has been fed on demand and is allergic to milk based formula, I haven't been able to find a way to detach her from my breasts at all so far.

I wanted to exclusively BF till at least 6 months, but now it is hard to introduce anything new into her diet.

She is mostly refusing to eat solids and will cry or scream and pull or hit at my blouse or bra till I give her breastmilk. I was thinking the first step might be to try and get her on a breast milk substitute from now but the formula's for babies with allergy's like her's are so expensive!! I gave her a little soya milk today which seemed ok, but she refused it after a few gulps and wanted breast milk again.

She does seem to be a very fussy baby when it comes to eating but only in the sense that she is determined to eat 'adult' food and not baby food (she snatches food off our plates but won't eat her own even if it is the same thing). But the biggest issue is her refusal to have anything else in large amounts except BM.

Are there any less expensive formula's I can try or is soya milk ok as a staple in her diet at this age?

I know this isn't the weaning forum, but any advice on how to get her to wean off my breasts slowly would also be greatly appreciated. I would love to get down to feeding just two or three times a day instead of being stuck to the sofa like I am now.

Hi

My dd is 9 months and also allergic to cows milk. I'm currently mix feeding so about 3 ff and 3-4 bf per day.

When you say soya milk is it wysoy? The alpro junior is supposed to be from plus 12 months. I get wysoy on prescription, have you seen your gp about it? There are other formulas like neocate, that are cows milk based but have had the proteins altered I think so they're suitable for cmp allergy. They are very expensive to buy and they taste foul so it's supposed to be very difficult to get an older baby to take them.

Some people are not keen on giving soya to little ones but both my gp and dietitian are fine with giving it to babies over 6 months.

Have you tried expressing and using some bf to add to the formula and gradually increase the ratio of formula to bf? This is how I introduced it, by about 10 days she was on all wysoy.

Sorry I can't really help with reducing the amount of times she feeds, my dd started to naturally fall into a pattern during the day at around 7 months, nightimes were a different matter though! :o

Hope you get some more advice soon

Have you thought about baby led weaning? Capitalise on her desire to share your food and let her!

stinkymice · 02/06/2012 16:38

Try goats milk. You can also get this in formula I think it is called 'nanny'.
Also don't panic about food, read up on baby lead weaning and let her eat from your plate :) its all good. Only when she is full up with other things can you miss a BF or else she will just be going hungry. It wont work the other way around, hungry babies just want whatever will satisfy their hunger the fastest eg boob!

Thanks for the responses, i'm going to dash out now to see what I can buy.
Really appreciated!

When you say she eats the same, are you doing Baby Led Weaning or are you puree-ing your foods for her?

I'm sorry your nipples hurt. Is she feeding at the nipple rather than further on to the breast? I know she's an older baby, but do keep an eye to the latch because that shouldn't be happening at this stage.

I second cutting all dairy from your diet. Infasoy has been good for DS to have an occassional alternative to breastmilk (he is 15m) but we are currently in the process of reintroducing dairy. So far, so good (touches wood).

As far as frequency goes, DS would feed all day if he could. Let her eat from you plate if it makes her happy at the moment - she'll soon want her own "big girls plate".

Mars - can you look here please.

Sorry for the hijack,. Blush

Before BLW was 'invented' we found out the easy way with my dd1 who refused all babyfood and spoons. In a fit of pique one day I chucked a cheese and cucumber sarnie at her (she was 8/9 months) which she proceeded to eat in its entirety! She hasn't looked back since (she is 9 now!)

thereinmadnesslies · 02/06/2012 18:36

Are you in the UK?? If so you can get Neocate and other dairy free formulas on prescription.

When your child is 1 she could try Oat Milk or Alpro Junior soya milk.

Iggly · 02/06/2012 18:42

Yes soya caused horrible reactions in DS who was also intolerant to cows milk. Horrible stuff.

I used calcium enriched oat milk once he turned one. His appetite increase (for solids) around 9/10 months.

Also dairy intolerant babies can also generally have sensitive digestive systems, so they react to other solids too. Citrus and green veg were awful as was beef. So try keeping it simple for her eg chicken, lamb, turkey, fish with rice/potatoes/pasta. Basically neat and two veg style meals. Easier to do as finger food too.
